He had clearly been saving up his tyres behind Hamilton.
But say he was planning to stop that lap anyway, consider this: on the lap that Hamilton pitted, Vettel reduced the gap from 1.9 to 0.7 seconds. Considering that, it would be save to assume Vettel would have had a very good chance to make up at least another 0.7 second in the lap before his pit stop.

If Hamilton had managed to do a proper outlap on new tyres he might just have put a better gap, Vettel was on older options I don't think he would have been able to compete. We have seen with the Pirellis that its better to pit early put on new tyres and put in a good outlap instead of staying out on old tyres. In comparison to the Bridgestone years it was almost opposite especially with refuelling involved.

Thing is we will never know what would have happened so debating hypotheticals is pointless really.

Christian Horner opted for arrogant over magnanimous when faced with defeat, saying McLaren won in Australia because Red Bull underperformed.

After dominating the world of Formula One last season, Red Bull came crashing down this weekend in Melbourne where McLaren's Lewis Hamilton claimed pole and Jenson Button the race victory.

And although Red Bull had a better Sunday than they did Saturday, finishing second and fourth in the race as opposed to fifth and sixth in qualifying, Horner is adamant his outfit is actually faster than McLaren.

"It was a good recovery and we had good pace in the race," said the Red Bull team boss.

"We were right on same pace as the McLarens and could have been faster.

"Overall it was a good recovery.

"I think we underperformed rather than McLaren being overly strong and that is the story - we can prove it next time we race."

He reckons RBR could've gone faster? That's what Whitmarsh said about McLaren, after the team messed the fuel calculations up!

Come on Horner, that was pretty lame. :beans:

Marussia wasn't that bad in the last race. Pic had a problem with oil pressure, but he seems as a nice talent. I wonder, will HRT be able to qualify for Malaysia? Personally, as time goes by, I think now, even more than before, that they should abandon Formula 1.

It's a shame. I want them to do well and stay in the sport. The more teams the merrier IMO! :(

They failed to qualify in Melbourne last year, but managed it in Sepang. Of course, they went on to beat Virgin overall in the season AGAIN! Hopefully, they'll do it again this time.

If they dont improve in the next race or two, I will be tending to agree with you. Whats the point of all the effort and money - just to go home on a Saturday night. And Im sure their (few) sponsors would agree.

This is why Vettel was going for the undercut in the pit stops. This is why he was 0.7 seconds behind Hamilton when Lewis pitted and why he was eating up the lap times at that moment. What the safety car prevented us from seeing is not a top speed-handicapped Red Bull trying to overtake Hamilton, but Vettel putting in two or three lightning fast laps to jump Hamilton after the pit stops.

On old option rubber? And no it wasn't going to be a close thrilling race for second since we saw that passing, was rather difficult.

I don't think he'd say something like this if he didn't mean it. I was surprised about Redbulls pace on Sunday, you never know what anyone's true pace is. Strange things happen in Australia sometimes...it isn't a typical race track. I remember teams absolutely dominating Australia, and then being on par with several others come the next race.

Many teams and drivers were testing the waters in Melbourne, McLaren were probably just best prepared. Malaysia will give a much better indication.

If what he said was true why did Button build a lead on Vettel with ease on the restart? Wouldn't you want to keep your cards close to your chest if it were true? why say something stupid like this to fire up the opposition? I know id love hearing this from an opponent i play in sport!

He's having to convince people their cars are fast, that alone speaks volumes.

Like i said earlier these comments stem from fear usually.
