Hi guys tell me some .... is there anything in the rules that governs or maybe fix gearbox ratios to a certain spec at all ??

Sort of. Teams are allowed to change gear ratios once for each weekend.

really ?? so what you saying is as long as they dont change the case it cannot be seen as a gearbox change ? .......I dont get it.
was under the impression thats why they were supposed to use a gearbox for 4 races so that teams dont benefit from the ratio changes one track to the next. If the are allowed to change ratios as they wish why have a no gearbox change rue at all...

No its to reduce costs so they can't change gear box every race.

You couldn't run a ratio of monaco in turkey it just wouldn't work you'd be on the limiter very quickly

thats exactly my point. I am far too lazy to go look it up but I think the intention of the 4 race gearbox rule is there for that reason. so that teams may not benefit from changing ratios between races. with that in mind it tells me thats why mclaren changed hammies gearbox for better ratios in order to get him faster up the field which.

Ofcourse not!

bud ... are they allowed to open the box - take the clusters out - replace em with new ones and close the box again without a penalty ??? where is the sense in that ?

mclaren changed lewis' gearbox be he damaged it in that shunt.

they are allowed to change ratios but nothing else, not allowed to replace any parts only change the gear ratios. do be serious, could you really see them using the monaco ratios in turkey, everybody topping out half way down the straight.

The ratio would be pretty set, they changed his gearbox because he damaged it in the crash.

The rule there is to save costs.

think a lil .... I refuse to go look it up. I dont see the sense in changing ratios and not be penalised but changing the box gets one. I guess i may be wrong..... where is Bill or Chris if you need em ????

lol the commentators were talking about it in either qualifying of FP3 yesterday, he said they can go inside the gearbox and change the ratios, but they cant actually replace any parts or change anything else.

They can change the ratios ONCE before each grand prix so they can set it up for Q1 then thats it

look at it this way if you qualified lower than you expected you can't then change the ratio to help you accerelate faster to gain places.

negative longbow.... this is what I found and I think it says gearboxes as well as same ratios for 4 races...... am i reading it right ??

a) Each driver may use no more than one gearbox for four consecutive Events in which his team competes. Should a driver use a replacement gearbox he will drop five places on the starting grid at that Event and an additional five places each time a further gearbox is used. Any replacement gearbox must be fitted with the same gear ratios that were declared under d) below and will only be required to complete the remainder of the Event in question. Any change to the gear ratios declared under d) below will incur a further five grid place penalty. In either case a new four
race sequence may start at the following Event.

They can't fix gear ratios for the gearbox's four-race life because of the different requirements for tracks. Take Barcelona and Monte Carlo as your examples. At Barcelona, you would want your ratios set up to give a greater maximum speed, whereas at Monte Carlo you would want better acceleration. Brundle (I think) explained it on the BBC coverage yesterday by comparing Monaco with Monza. If you used Monaco's gear ratios at Monza, you'd be on the limiter nearly all the way down the straights and you would not reach the kind of speed that Monza requires. If you were driving the Brawn or Red Bull, you'd easily be picked off by the Honda RA107 in a straight line.

i think that says, is that if you change a gearbox during a event (lewis' case now) you have to put the same gear-ratios in that gearbox as was in the original once, so they can change the gear ratios on the thursday, then even if they have a new gearbox, the ratios must stay the sa broken gearbox they previously used that weekend.
