We need very fast cars. to claw back the magic lost in F1. But FIA think safety wins fans. seriously. At least make speed machines. Why would anyone watch F1 now. There is no danger, so why not make faster cars.

WE WANT POWER. THROW AWAY V6'S AND PUT W16'S IN THEM.

Safety should always be top priority; it's a sport not a war. Also making cars faster and faster and faster doesn't mean better racing (In fact with added aero it removes racing), the problem occur when they start doing laps of Silverstone in 1:05 and have to start extending tracks/making races 100 laps, which would be dangerous on the drivers in terms of G-Forces and sheer constant pressure.

Whaa whaa whaa, just shut up a you face. You guys are all going to eat it up when cars are doing powerslides side by side out of a turn.

If the drivers are saying they are more challenging to drive then can we assume the difference in natural talent will come to the fore and offer up more rewarding races that way. A shift towards giving the drivers more input is a good thing surely. With speeds being similar to that of 2000, when nobody complained about lack of pace and most people only watching on TV where raw pace is hard to judge anyway, I don't see them being slower as an issue. If it's power not aero related and teams sharing engines then there won't be the situaution of one team riding off into the distance because they've harnessed the regs better.

They haven't even turned a wheel in anger yet and everyone wants the rules changed; rules put in place to get away from the snoozy RBR domination. Never happy, some people.

My thoughts exactly. Looking at the history in which F1 gains speed, I'm sure they'd be kicking the lower divisions a$$ like GP2 or whatever in no time. Just give them half a year to get their development up to speed...and like you said if the drivers state that skill is still very much involved, I don't see a problem.

Completely agree. Once reliability etc are sorted out the speed will rise very quickly. There is bound to be 20% margin and more that Merc for example can extract further even after homologation by exploiting the potential of things like ERs, turbo boost, 'traction enhancement' engine modes and of course aero

Its funny how so many are panicking and assuming the speed will remain fixed at what we saw at Jerez. Yes Jerez times were very low compared to previous Jerez times, but this year is an exceptional one at Jerez. And it would be the first time ever cars did not keep getting quicker after a reg change

I believe turbo boost is limited under the regulations

'traction enhancement' engine modes and of course aero

I'm also fairly certain there are only 2 engine maps allowed - one for wet and one for dry.

Saw this image over at F1technical and had a few thoughts about it.

The things that stand out to me is how well the whole front of the car is working from an aerodynamic perspective. I've got one arrow labelled 1. Note how well the camera housing is working at separating the airflow at the right location. Also note how the complete length of the housing is covered in flow viz showing little to no separation.

Next look at how well the pull rod is working, keeping a clear path underneath the nose and allowing more height underneath enabling a low pressure area that is directing the air flow down and also encouraging the airflow off the nose past the camera housing towards the intakes. So we have good airflow under the floor and to the pods with very little impact from the suspension. This looks a very neat and effective result.

Lastly look at the other two arrows, both labeled 2. They point to a clearly visible line of from the flowviz with the stream almost perfectly targeting the intakes.

What must be very pleasing about this is that their first setup has worked so well, which is a validation that (as they have subsequently said) their wind-tunnel testing has been well validated by track data.

Not that relevant, but interesting to note the separation caused by the transfers/stickers used on the nose. Look at the tricolore at the corners for the most visible representations of this.

I think there is a small curve until the top of the flag, which is properly what's causing the edges to very slightly stick up generating the weird separation, similar with the Shell logo.

It's no coincidence Spanky that Merc and Ferrari have taken such a clear and similar direction. Even the camera mounts (skirting regulations) They've both arrived at very similar conclusions and cooling airflow as well as a clean coke bottle end with very tight packaging in the back.

They're getting rear grips others aren't.

You would have to think that Merc have been a lot more thorough about it. Just from what we have seen so far. For example they are using a tuning fork shaped lower suspension member at the front. This helps aero in the same way as the camera mounts.

I dont think Ferrari have detailing like this, although they are said to have a super clever cooling system which cools like, a cooling system

If you have to have your suspension sections in that area, then yes, Mercedes solution is indeed elegant. Ferrari have chosen pull rod for the front and one of the advantages is you don't need a suspension piece in that area underneath where you are trying to create the pressure differential. So in this comparison Ferrari's design is completely clean, Mercedes does it's best to minimize the component it has to put in the way.

That is one of the advantages of pull rod. But there are advantages to push rod also and we are just focusing here on one element of the front suspension.

Wolff cautiously optimistic after first test
http://jackleslief1.blogspot.co.uk/2014 ... -with.html

"In terms of mileage I would say we are ahead of schedule, while in terms of the bits and pieces we have struggled with and the challenges ahead of the first race, I think we are about where we expected to be."

"We are some way from what we expect to be our full potential, and there are a few things not quite functioning as we would like, however we are proud of the integrated concept produced by the teams at Brackley and Brixworth."

some way from what we expect to be our full potential!!

What I'm concerned about are the pit calls at Merc this year. I don't see WHO will be able to override a set strategy the day before, on a wet/dry track....WHO makes the calls? Not Wolff, not Lauda, certainly not Lowe...he's overseeing the whole thing, I'm sure they have experienced 'teams' to assess the situation but their leader last time was a clear pro at strategy and now there's no visible pro, at least from the outside.

And somewhere Wolff was very open about 'Brawn being missed this year' especially in 'tense situations'....is he already making excuses for possibly dumb calls this year? Intriguing stuff.

I know. I worry about that. The way Brawn calls it with authority and has the respect of the drivers. Very very tough act to follow!

Well there is one guy out of a job at McLaren, maybe Paddy could hire him to come help with the strategy calls

Or maybe Paddy could just pull his finger out and earn his wage instead of making excuses already

Oh man I would so love to sit back and watch the rage if Whitmarsh was to join Mercedes.

Wouldnt it be more fun to learn and talk about F1 instead of just reacting to what others post about F1

if you went to a football match bet you spend the whole time looking at what the crowd were doing instead of watching the match
