Well... Charlie Whitting said he thought it was OK, he even emailed them saying so!
I guess Ferrari could always miss next year's YDT, if it turns out Whitting is wrong, eh??

Charlie Whiting and the FiA lawyer both have to be wrong. Now Charlie maybe will screw up again but not the shark. Poor Mercedes having been dealt such an injustice because of a mistake they didnt make.

Mercedes seems none the worse for the "punishment"!
In fact, they are definitely better off having won 3 out of the 5 races since!!

Can't blame a team for putting a fast car on the grid in Australia and developing it throughout the season. Luca wishes.

Well I'm gonna guess Schumacher / Ferrari. I've got a feeling Vettel has only managed 4 in a row?

(Hmm, and I'm sure the first 6 races won by Brawn in 2009 was split between Button /Barrichello )

Luca di Montezemolo says the FIA showed a lack of courage when dealing with the Mercedes tyre testing scandal.

Mercedes was banned from this year's Young Driver Test at Silverstone having carried out a three-day tyre test for Pirelli using a 2013 car earlier in the season. The FIA's International Tribunal handed out the punishment having apportioned some blame to Mercedes, some to Pirelli and some to the FIA itself.

However, Montezemolo says the FIA did not show enough courage to properly punish Mercedes and that the benefits are now clearly being seen despite the tyres having been altered twice since that test.

"Formula 1 also has to be a clean sport without any of the monkey business we have had to put up with in recent years," Montezemolo told Corriere della Sera. "From next season, we will have a completely different F1, finally less dependent on aerodynamics. I build cars not planes. We will finally have testing again and not a farce like what we saw this year with one team doing illegal testing without even paying the right penalty for it.

"In this case, I would have expected more clarity and courage from the FIA. On the other hand, the benefits gained by the team that carried out the secret banned testing are watched by everyone: before then, it had not won a single grand prix, then after the test it won three out of five races. These are the sort of serious incidents that affect F1's credibility and alter the championship."

I think Luca is one sore loser. The tyres in use are not the ones Mercedes tested. Sour grapes Luca!
Mercedes were not 'punished' as there was no intent to gain an advantage. They sat out the YDT to allow other teams the same testing they had had.

In di Montezemolo's defence, the YDT wasn't the "same" testing granted to Mercedes, was it?
Alonso and Massa did NOT test for three days straight covering 1000km.

Yes, the opportunity was given them; but, NOT to the extent that Hamilton and Rosberg had
in Barcelona, without the FIA / the media looking over their shoulders.

Did anything besides tires get tested in Barcelona? We only have the word of a team who has
"suddenly" won three out of the last five races on tires that they "suddenly" understand!

Also, it would seem that Mercedes received data from the YDT, which is more than the other
teams got from Barcelona!

The only thing wrong with di Montezemolo's comments is the timing! He should have been more
vocal when this all went down! Unfortunately, as you say, this has the look of sour grapes!

I personally don't feel that the penalty was enough, Merc got away with that one scot free.

In terms of Motezemolo's timing I think he's trying to deflect questions away from Ferrari about their plummeting pace.
