Vettel should have given the position back. Period.

The same thing has happened many times with simmilar penalty... The problem with vettel was that because it was near the end, his penalty seemed like it cost more.... But had he ran a drive-thru it could have been equally damaging.... But it was pretty clear he only made the pass cause he had all wheels outside. It doesnt matter if he did it before when he was not passing.... Stewards are ussualy more forgiving when they do it in a non-passing situation.....

That penalty helped Alonso in the standings.... But thats how it goes.

Hockeneheim has a knack of giving us a good debate over what is right and wrong. Two races in a row now! :munchies:

Huh?
Is there ANY doubt about the penalty on vettel? Also, what happened last yr that merited debate?

The last Hockenheim race was 2010, the 2011 race was held at the Nurburgring :)

Ahhhhh should have guessed..... coming from a lew+eng username lol

SV has a little bit more to lose than JB when we look at the championship standing. So it's understandable if he chose to take a wider line in order to avoid an entanglement that could spell a dnf.

Ah but that's the thing, he didn't do what he did because he was being careful, he did it because he was desperate to overtake. So he comes in hot after the DRS zone, late brakes and still isn't able to overtake Jenson so he's left with only one option, go wide or else run into him. So by going wide he's able to do two things, one maintain his momentum, and two overtake off track due to that momentum and accelerate out in front of Jenson.

We go back to the same old, same old... what if there had been a gravel trap there, or a wall? He'd not have tried that pass or that late braking in the first place. So penalty served because there was a penalty committed. No harm, it happens all the time and people give the position back... but to claim that there was no penalty, and then to have Nana Helmut to come in and defend what was obviously a poor decision is making them look foolish to say the least.

Next Helmut will blame the stewards for not issuing a warning after Vettel had slewed off the track there on previous laps. If there was no warning then it must be OK to leave the track at that point.

FFS!!! Do you guys think I'm stupid or something? I meant the last two races at Hockenheim! I.E. 2010 and 2012!!! In 2010, we had the team order thing. And, in my opinion, there's NO debate over what happened with Seb's penalty, but it still seems to be a topic of discussion even now in this thread! Hence, my light-hearted observation!

F!cking hell! :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Wtf is your problem? It was a simple misunderstanding from spanky, why get your knickers in a complete twist?

Err, Lew, if you read my post you will see I was providing a reasonable explanation to a reasonable misunderstanding, f1ea thought you were talking about "last year" and I was explaining the previous Hockenheim race was in 2010  Perhaps read and think next time before you Image

EDIT * correct Hammer, lets just leave it at misunderstanding :)
#313834
Thank you Hammer for your tremendous contribution, sorry spanky (my irritation was more centred around the initial redundant response).

Hey ho, let's leave it there, before it ends up like the Jenson Button / Sam Michael threads.
#313838
In fact, that was completely out of order. I'm sorry guys. I deserve a whole year in DD's dungeon for this.

Golly, get talking everyone, and hide this particular page from view!:hehe:

(Apologies f1ea, spanky and Hammer)
