Considering it was developed in a pre-industrial world, the Imperial system makes perfect sense because every man carried his inch, hand, span, foot and yard measurements with him everywhere he went. What made no sense atall was England's pre-decimilization currency system.

Regarding the Anglophobes, I find it a touch hypocritical that one would deign to use the English language to complain about England.

Too much hate in this thread... so in the Christmas spirit, here's a little international something to bring cheer to us all. :D

Heaven & Hell

Heaven is where the police are British, the chefs Italian, the mechanics German, the lovers French and it's all organized by the Swiss.

Hell is where the police are German, the chefs British, the mechanics French, the lovers Swiss and it's all organized by the Italians.

And the gallon is a man's bladder (probably Irish  ) or what? I don't give a rat's arse whether it made sense back then - it doesn't now, so it should be abolished everywhere (and I realize over here, stateside, we are the worst offenders  ).

whats wrong with my post, i dont read any papers with false stories ie the sun, daily mail, if your trying to pass off this thread as ignorant or misinformed.

also, i said working class but there are a lot of middle class people who get just as drunk and disorderly, mainly on cheap wine with their spoilt kids, because they're "old enough at 16 to do what tgey like".
AND I havent seen one miainformed post about ww2, can you point me in the direction?

I wasn't having a go at you, just making an observation related to the British press and their influence on what people think of us, so don't be defensive...:P

As for the Battle of Britain, that was mostly in response to one of hounddub's points.

If you want to see anti-Britishness in action, check out the Eurovision Song Contest; the year after Britain agreed with the US to go to war in Iraq, Britain got little or no votes for song(s) that were better than the average Eurovision fair. In fairness Britain did deserve it even if the musicians didn't personally perpetrate the crime!

I think it's just the tall poppy syndrome. Britain in recent centuries has been the most powerful country in Europe and England the most powerful country in the union so it will bare the brunt of the flak.
But a lot of the recent animosity stems from the use of the English language throughout Europe. The French especially do not like it when you speak to them in English instead of French, even if they know English fluently.

As an Australian in say France, you get the same reaction as someone said earlier, Once you point out youre an Aussie and not English, all the sudden they speak to you in English and with a smile.

Using the frog lovers  as an example is too meaningless, they will always have a special place in their heart to hate us rosbifs!

I do have a thing against that darned measure system. It makes no sense!!

The metric system!? Dude...

I think he was talking about the English system, gallons, pounds and all that crap that doesn't make sense.[/quote]

 No sense at all. Even the temperature scale is crazy.... OMG.
C'mon, admit it, you guys secretely use the metric; but when people's watching use the english.
Gotta get these brits to confess.... bring out the whips.

It's outdated imperial measurements, of course it makes no sense. :P Although from what i've seen my generation tends not to use pounds and ounces and whatever. The exception is, of course, the pint... :hehe:

Ah yes... The pint :cloud9:

Also, you came up with the coolest name for money: Pound Sterling... sounds so cool.

Merry christmas by the way!

Can I just point out that we use metric in everything but road distances?

We use celsius, kilos, metres, 100 pence makes a pound... miles are the sole aberration. It's the americans who use the freaky measurement systems - Fahrenheit, for goodness sake!!
