Alonso is a bit of a sausage dastardly character in F1 at the moment. The one who everbody loves to hate, cept he actually wins races.
Easy to admire, hard to love pretty much sums up Alonso. It's easy to admire the wins he took at singapore and monza. It's easy to admire how he overtook Hamilton twice on track towards the end of the season. But it's impossible to love a guy who still claims Hockhiem 10, and Singapore 08 as just wins, and especially it's hard to admire someone who childishly slows down after a race and gives off to petrov.
After the 2006 battle with Ferrari, dirty fight Michael Schumacher’s style, everybody in Italy hated Fernando Alonso. Today after having a closest relation with him almost everybody in Italy loves and admires him. I assume that he isn’t Mister Perfect, he make mistakes as the Petrov incident that you say, but it was in a moment of high stress. Don’t forget that Fernando Alonso has millions of fans around the world that love and admire him, not only in Spain and Italy. That despite the Fernando Alonso’s version given trough the British media since the problems he had with McLaren. The most false, stupid and fallacious that I have ever seen.
Take a look for example to Michael Schumacher the great champion, a gentleman driver, so easy to admire and love. I man that believes that fair play is the name of an illness. That almost kills Rubens Barrichello just for the sake of it. Nobody hates him like Fernando Alonso is hated.
It’s unbelievable, but it’s the truth and all of that just because of his 2007 relationship with McLaren.
