but what was going on at the end with Vettel and Newey?

From what I've read, Red Bull has some involvement with Polyphony and GT5, and they seem to be proud of that. According to Red Bull's website:

Red Bull Racing will be playing an important part in the next edition of Sony's PlayStation series Gran Turismo which is released this November.

For months the F1 team has been working with Polyphony, the company behind the game after Red Bull was asked to become part of the latest chapter: GT5 – The Real Driving Simulator.

In this version, gamers will get the chance drive the Nordschleife, try out the Top Gear test track and unlock a special car which... well, let's just say Adrian Newey is involved as is Sebastian Vettel and they both met the game's designer Kazunori Yamauchi in Milton Keynes earlier this year. The Factory and the Red Bull-owned Hangar-7 restaurant in Salzburg have also been recreated and feature within the game.

I suspect we may at least see Red Bull's F1 car in the game, and possibly the 2010 incarnation (not sure how that works in terms of licensing since I know Codemasters is doing the F1 2010 game). Maybe the game won't officially call it Formula 1, but perhaps instead may refer to it as something like "Formula Polyphony" or "Formula Gran Turismo".

every other f1 team has its own bespoke in house race similator...........

I suspect there'll be F1 cars from at least a couple of teams, probably not from 2010 season though. I also suspect that the Newey/Vettel thing might indicate some sort of concept formula as F1 cars cannot easily reach 400kph.

I'd get a PS3 since I'd be in the market for a new console but I've never actually played driving simulations on a console, I did fool around with GT3 back when the PS2 came out and I loved the graphics and feel of the game but just didn't get into the feel of driving a car with a game controller. Granted I played it for all of one hour so I may not have gotten a good feel for it in the first place.

How is it long term playing a good sim game like the GT series without a the real steering wheel and pedals?

I only recently bought a wheel in anticipation of GT5 coming out so haven't used it much and played through all the previous GT games with the controller and had a lot of fun with it. Find a controller setup you're comfortable with, I prefer using the two sticks but some people prefer using a stick for steering and the triggers for acc/brake. Use manual transmission and turn the drivers aids (TC/ASM/ABS) down as low as you feel you can and as you improve you'll be able to set them lower and imo it feels a lot better, you can't just stomp on the gas or brake but with fine control you can get much better lines.

With the steering wheel you get force feedback through the wheel which is a lot more work and even a small mistake can (and usually does) end in a much bigger disaster than it would with the controller. In the GT Academy competition run over the christmas period the majority of the top drivers and everyone who went through to the finals were using wheels, there were one or two controller users thereabouts but they were an exception but that doesn't mean you'll be able to improve your times just by getting a wheel.

I play Forza Motorsport 3 to switch. I race in top 5% on the leaderboards, i played prologue and was tired of oversteering. Felt like i burnt the rubber of the back of wheels making the cars almost undriveable.

I still want to get it, if it can beat forza motorsport.

I found I could fix the oversteer problems by putting harder tyres on the front with a lot of cars but I think the physics are going to be quite different in the full game.

I'm enjoying GT5 prologue atm and am participating in a lot of the time trial events. I usually race on suzuka because it is very challenging to get the breaking points right, but when you do it is very rewarding. I've got a BMW M3 with all the electronic stuff turned off and got a 2:17 so about 500th in the world. I do feel however I can improve on that time if I get a wheel. I'm looking for cheap g25s because they hold their price really well but the wheel is great and the main reason on getting it is because unlike most it has a clutch.

Oh yes I understand what you mean now! I've learned never to touch professional physics, atleast without a wheel that is. The x button is not sensitive enough to pick up progressive acceleration. That's why I drive standard for now...

On FM3 we you have the trigger so you can rise to 100% thats a huge difference if you dont use TCS STM so i will see it when its out.

Why use X for accelerate? I find he stick is much better for fine control, others will say the triggers.

I have always used the X button to accelerate and square to brake, R1 and L1 to upshift/downshift and the d-pad to steer. Which works well enough for professional physics for me; although my driving style is more ON or OFF the accelerator/brake.

For me, I've been using these controls for over ten years and have adjusted to it pretty well, but annoyingly I try more progressive controlling methods but I never feel as involved, even if it is a better idea.

On FM3 i use 2 two triggers for accel and brake,

A on the 360 is the clutch then X for shift up and B for shift down. That way i can change gears as quick as f1 cars.

love gran turismo - hell I'm still in love with the old one for their pure combination of authenicity and gaming nounce. Guess I'll have to make friends with ps3 owners at school now.

I also LUV the Gran Turismo games. It has been almost two years since I have played GT4 and if memory serves me I'm about 85-90% complete, sold my game but kept the memory card  . Now that I have a 36" HD flat screen tv I need to get another PS2 and finish GT4. A PS3 is still not in the card's at the moment but hopefully I will have one in the not to distant future.
