I wonder if Bernie didn't know about this? He'll be ranting and fuming yet again when he has to give the race back to Silverstone some day. :D

I think Bernie has always wanted a British Grand Prix. He just wants our facilities to be at least near in comparison with others around the world. So he kept kicking up a stink
I think he may in the end fund it himself. Wouldn't surprise me.

He'd better. I don't see why he wouldn't, doesn't he own Istanbul's entry or something?

From F1 Live:

Two central figures have played down reports that contractual protections could safeguard Britain's traditional spot on the Formula One calendar.

It emerged this week that not only are key European events singled out for protection by the FIA, the same special status for the races is mentioned in F1's separate commercial arrangements.

But Damon Hill, President of the Silverstone-owning British Racing Drivers' Club, said the potential demise of Donington's 2010 contract would not mean the automatic reversion to another British venue.

Referring to the protection clauses for key races including the British Grand Prix, he said: "It's always been a statement of intention rather than a solid agreement. The trouble is, there is no way of enforcing it," Hill told the Daily Telegraph.

FIA President Max Mosley agrees that while some races do have protected status, F1 Chief Executive Bernie Ecclestone is not stringently bound to maintaining those events.

"The FIA's deal with Bernie means he cannot present a calendar without the traditional Grand Prix," he told The Guardian. "However it is not our role to insist that a Grand Prix takes place in a sub- standard venue.

"Just like people who want the World Cup or the Olympic Games have to pay the going rate, what we cannot do is to force Bernie to race below the going rate," said Mosley.

See is it me or are the national papers/sites recycling the same news.
I'm sure we all knew about the European "Protection" offered by the FIA. It made sod all difference for France didn't it?

Donington race could be postponed

By Pablo Elizalde Tuesday, May 12th 2009, 09:21 GMT

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says the British Grand Prix could skip a year if the Donington Park circuit isn't ready in time for next season.

"If the work at Donington is not finished in time, we would be happy to skip a year," Ecclestone told The Times newspaper.

Ecclestone made it clear he preferred the British race to be absent from the calendar for a year rather than return to Silverstone.

"I don't want to lose the British Grand Prix - that's the last thing we want to do, but we aren't going to Silverstone for sure," he added.

Doubts about the British GP at Donington re-emerged earlier this month after it was announced circuit owner Tom Wheatcroft was taking legal action against the track's leaseholders for unpaid rent.

Donington Ventures boss Simon Gillett denied had been jeopardised by the action against his company.

Gillett also insisted the rebuilding project would still be completed in time for the race.

Not having the British Grand Prix on the calendar should be a criminal offence, then Bernie can be locked away in a Home.

F1 live:
In a confidential letter, the chairman of the British Racing Drivers' Club has reportedly proposed to sell the Silverstone circuit, the long-time host of the British Grand Prix which is set to present its final F1 round this year.

The leaked proposal, made in writing by Robert Brooks, would have to be backed by other members of the track-owning club. The move could theoretically be a shot in the arm to the hopes of the Northamptonshire track of retaining its Formula One status.

The British Grand Prix is moving to Donington starting next year, but amid reported problems the possibility of seeing the race postponed until 2011 has risen.

The Guardian newspaper claims that front of the queue to buy Silverstone could be the circuit's seasoned critic Bernie Ecclestone.

Should the F1 chief executive buy the Silverstone circuit, he could run the British Grand Prix at the venue "as he pleases."

The newspaper also claims that the BRDC, which has owned Silverstone since 1971, irritates the 78-year-old billionaire "intensely."

Shot in the arm maybe it is...
