But what did they do to McLaren?

In 2007, during the Spygate scandal, McLaren were docked all their constructors points and fined $100m... If found guilty I expect a similar punishment for Mercedes!

You seem to be deliriously waiting for the punishment. :hehe:

Anyway... I still can't understand how McLaren got fined so heavily. I mean, if some dude from a rival business came to me and handed me important business secrets on my lap, I can't see how I'm at fault. It's GIVEN to me, it's a gift, and I can do what the hell I want with it. Surprised McLaren couldn't work their way out of that one...which makes those "Max used that excuse to f*ck Dennis over" conspiracies all that much easier to believe.

The thing is that Ron Dennis basically shopped his own team after Alonso tried to blackmail the team, it seems that the team genuinely didn't know about it except for a few key personnel, when RD did find out he exposed it, so in essence McLaren were harshly punished, it's not like it was covered up, at least that is my understanding!

Nah, the business should still have very strict rules of compliance and legality, if it was working with sensitive data. And well, maintaining fair competitive advantage, is a must; requiring them to come down heavy on breaches of such a nature, otherwise teams will breach on purpose, and take the punishment which won't exceed the advantage. They have to show teams it isn't worth it, and show the fans F1 is a sporting contest.

For such an avid longterm F1 fan you seem to forget a lot of the big stories that have happened. You sure you just didn't start watching in 2008 when Hamilton started.....?

Bernie said "that the fine was 10 million for the crime and 90 million for Ron being a prat"

It was because Mclaren management lied and said they did not know about the Ferrari info, but they did

It's the same in any company when there is something corrupt going on high-up. Only a few people will know about it, but sadly these are the people who represent the company. In this case it seems like they tried to cover their tracks despite the existence of some quite damning evidence, which I doubt will have helped their case too much. But it was quite a serious breach as far as the F1 reg's go so a severe punishment was needed, plus it sends out a message that this sort of caper wouldn't be tolerated. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be a particularly common occurence so it's probably quite difficult to arrive at a punishment due to the lack of precedent.

@Jabber Yeah...90% of the fine was then due to lack of transparency, ok I can buy that. If they had just made another set photocopied and kept it in a drawer and waved the original ones in Mosley's face and said "here, someone left this sh(t in our mail, take it"...they could've had a stellar year.

Mosley was after Ron. He was judge, jury and accuser. He could do what he wanted and he wanted Ron out. Other teams were doing the same thing and didnt even get a smacked wrist.. I'm not a massive fan of Todt but he has righted that ridiculous situation that Mosely was operating.

I agree with RC. Mosley had it in for RD and it was an overly harsh punishment in my honest opinion. Just docking championship points would be enough because they'd lose the prize money.

Could the reason that Red Bull have been so eager to point the finger and act all righteous regarding Mercedes be because they want to divert attention from their own misdemeanours?

Are they using illegal traction control?
