I just returned home from the ASP Baton class and man am I sore and my chest will be black and blue tomorrow!! Talk about a great workout and we also learned some very persuasive self-defense techniques. All the mechanics or arrest and wrist/arm locks we have learned along with the baton are non-lethal defense techniques because the final tech is deadly force ie our firearms.
I am very interested to have ASP baton class, I want to know how to handle a police baton I think that would be a good self defense techniques.
As a soon be state certified LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) I had to get my state certification just to carry one through my police academy. Without being in a state certified police academy, law enforcement officer, corrections officer or a state certified security officer it is illegal to carry or possess a baton in a public setting. The baton is considered to be a non-lethal weapon but a well placed strike can kill someone.
Also you cannot buy one without showing some form of proof that you are certified to purchase one. The ASP Baton is alot like carrying a baseball bat in your backseat or trunk for protection as they are considered 'clubs' which are prohibited weapons unless there is substantial proof ie gloves, balls, mits etc etc to prove it is for baseball and not a defense weapon.
