Good read. It seems to agree with some of my previous posts about Ferrari having a focus on cooling and the "shut" off of the engine on the off throttle, which I commented on way back when we first saw the Ferrari engine in that LaFerrari mule.

This comment from Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell is noteworthy IMO "Cooling has become such an important issue, both for power and for the aerodynamics"

10 days til Melbourne and, reading the latest comments from Fernando (basically re-enforcing comments from Nico and other drivers) that fuel economy is going to restrict drivers from being able to race is a very depressing thought.

I know there are plenty of people reassuring me that the race lap time differences (this year from last year) will be overcome. But that too genuinely worries me. I am trying to convince myself now that if they are 1 second slower it won't be too bad - but it is really depressing to see how ordinary F1 is becoming.

I was bored and did some caluculations, and it is amazing how efficient the engines really are this year.

These figures are for road cars so will be a bit off for F1

The ideal Air/Fuel ratio is 15:1. So 15 grams of air to 1 gram of fuel.
1 gram of air is 0.77L

The New engine regulations are 1.6L, boosting to 3.5 bar.
That is an equivalent to a 5.6L engine.

So per revolution at 3.5bar then engine will use 7.27 grams of Air, and 0.48 grams of fuel.

At max rpm (15,000) and max boost, the engine will use 7200g or 7.2kg of fuel per minute.

Are you sure about that, at 7.2kg per minute the 100kg would only last 13 minutes! Are you taking into account that fuel/air goes into each cylinder only every 2nd revolution?

Are you sure about that, at 7.2kg per minute the 100kg would only last 13 minutes! Are you taking into account that fuel/air goes into each cylinder only every 2nd revolution?

I have not taken into account that that we are at 1 bar of pressure normally either. (Will have a look at that when I get back home)

There IS a replacement for displament and it's called forced induction.

But with the 100kg/h limit they won't get near that. This is what I was wondering about, if the fuel flow is measured at the injectors then there's no problem but if it's measured elsewhere such as nearer the fuel tank then could they do something like this:
Could the pipework (in between fuel flow measure and the injectors) be used as some sort of reservoir, during off throttle braking it gets filled then used coming out of corners to give the engine more than the 100kg/h limit while accelerating?

EDIT: Just found this in the tech regs

5.10.5 Any device, system or procedure the purpose and/or effect of which is to increase the flow rate after the measurement point is prohibited.

So they couldn't get away with what I was thinking of, at least legally.

I suppose they could have some sort of collapsible bladder, but not sure how that would be hidden

No, I just found that they couldn't get away with it, there's a fuel flow sensor in the fuel tank but there's measurements taken at the injectors too and there's a rule forbidding doing it.
