Here is a great read!! A question and answer session with Andy Cowell. He's managing director of Mercedes AMG Performance Powertrains. He's talking about the engines, about the importance of working closely with Petronas and getting their competitive edge.

There are three cars on the grid using Petronas fuel, Merc (You'd hope so too), Force India and Williams. Just thought you might be interested to know.

Well that's pretty obvious...but what difference does it make to Merc? It's part of their mandate, satisfying customers with their product (with the help of Petronas) and beating them at the same time.

I know more than just Mercedes are using Mercedes engines.
What I found interesting about the article was the explanations about their aims and how they'd gone about designing and building this new engine.....Powertrain. I'm not that technical but I could understand that.

I just found it interesting how McLaren aren't using Petronas high performance fuel stuff (They're sponsored by Total or someone else aren't they?)

Ah okay, I didn't know that. If that's the case I find it surprising...obviously the PU will be built to perform best with Petronas' compositions, so McLaren would be at a slight disadvantage wouldn't they.

How many engines will we see pop during qualifying for the first handful of GPs?

Mobil isn't it? I seem to remember crossing it out on my. Lewis T shirt and writing in Petronas. :hehe:

McLaren are sponsored by Mobil and therefore have to use their fuel. But its only for 1 year so hoepfully Honda will learn from that and work closely with Mobil.

But they've been using Mobil for several years, whereas Merc has been making their engines for Petronas for a few years too.

The article makes a point of saying that in this new regulatory era converting the most energy out of each unit of fuel has led to BIG changes i.e. working closer than before with the fuel providers

Is that what you meant?

Yes and no, McLaren are using a fuel that the engine isn't designed for, granted it'll work but will it have the same power output, will it make it more or less responsive etc. They are also the only Merc engined team not using Petronas fuel, so that might hint at it being more powerful.

You know the teams specify what they want and the vendors provide it. They also then do analysis to make sure that the viscosity and octane ratings are legal and exactly what was specified by the teams. I doubt that there is significant performance difference between Mobile, Shell, Petronas, Total and anyone else.

Well Im stupid. I thought all teams used the same fuel, from the same provider. And the sponsors (petronas / Mobil / etc), were just sponsors.
