I keep being more and more disappointed about the overall state of everyday car design. I didn't like the direction BMW took, I despised the direction Mercedes took and VWs no longer look distinctive like they used to. At 100 yards you can park a Hyundai, a Honda, a VW, a Toyota and not be able to tell which is which.

VW killed the new beetle redesign. I'd love to see a retro Mk 1 golf reintroduced to light up the hot hatchback segment.

Actually Subaru is the only one I can think of that's making distinctive choices still available.

I think KIA has been making some pretty nice looking cars lately. And the new Fusion is nice too.

Absolutely not! They'll ruin it like BMW did with the Mini! :( Although i would agree, hot hatches are crap these days.

I disagree with you on the Mini, I think they did a good job. All the other variants have left me lukewarm, but the original, in a a John Cooper S package is actually a VERY capable car, does some bit of clobberin' in autocrosses as well.

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Mini stateside, so it's been a financial success for BMW.

The trouble with new cars is that NCAP and other "safety" people add rules that make all cars heavy. Have a look at what a mk1 fiesta weighs compared to a modern fiesta. Plus for all the Green people out there how many mpg and pollution is caused by the extra weight of a plethora of air bags, side impact protection, crumple zones.

Put a modern engine in an old car is the way forward

As long as you don't mind dying a horrific death in an RTA.

They are incredibly popular here too. I spent a lot of time driving an '04 Cooper a few years ago, and while it was ok enough, it was far from special. For the price you pay the performance, specs, and perhaps more importantly amount of space in the car is utterly laughable! It felt just like every other modern hatchback i have driven, but (in most cases) not as good and more expensive. The true original Cooper is not compromised like the modern one. The funny thing about the modern one is that everyone buys them as a fashion statement when in reality there's so many of them about it's not even that, it's just another generic hatchback now.

The modern ones are, well, most of them (the usual brands like Ford, Vauxhall, etc) have the same appeal or character as the old ones in my view. Now it just seems like a necessary gimmick that all manufacturers of hatchbacks have to produce by default. But what's everyone going to remember in the not too distant future, a Renault Megane R26 or Mk1 Golf GTI? Enough said...

Isn't it funny the cars you miss!

I had a 89 corolla gt... (not the ae86 the model after) it was just brilliant.
When I think of the other cars I have had like Evo V, Integra type R, and the Robin Hood 2b, why the corolla stands out I don't know.
