Wow 17 pages of arguing.

I'm going to go out on what will no doubt be a very unpopular limb in this forum, and say that this is a direct result of how McLaren chooses to run its team. Hamilton was groomed from childhood to be a McLaren driver, he's signed through to 2012, I think he is likely considered property of the team by the McLaren management. Consequently, he doesn't always think about rules and regs on the track, he is a driving machine (I'll even concede that he is a very good one) and he does whatever the McLaren engineers tell him. Look at the transcript of the radio transmission, he had no idea what was going on. He can't even stop for a red light at the end of pit lane without someone telling him to. And let's not forget that poor Lewis had no idea that his car was drafted from stolen plans a few years ago... although De LaRosa sure knew, and he was third driver. I don't think this incident was Hamilton's fault but I think he should have the sense to tell the stewards what he said on the radio rather than feed them the company line of BS. It doesn't matter if you know the rules or not in this case, why would you tell two conflicting stories within 24 hours? I hope one day Hamilton gets on a team where he will be allowed to think in the cockpit and really tap into his potential. Ron Dennis and Anthony Hamilton are holding him back.

1. Hire a F'n expert on rules and regs, full time senior position. There is no reason why a team should be ignorant of any situation regarding rules. This goes for all teams. If there are questions, experts need to verify before race season.

Well, that would be pointless, for nobody can understand the rules, so full of loopholes and uncertainties are they. Anyway, whilst I think Hamilton should be punished for lying, I think the FIA have got the punishment wrong.

Yeh remove truli's penalty make hamilton 4th and then give him a fine.

that would of been acceptable.

Interesting that it's suddenly acceptable now that the alternative is disqualification :P

Well anything bestter than loosing driver and team points.

to be fair this is the FIA's fault from the get go for having such crap rules.

No this is not the FIA's fault but the fault of anyone not following the rules. Rules and regulations are handed out to everyteam and everyone must follow these rules, rules shouldn't be "crap" for one team because they broke it and good for another team because they followed it, its the same rules for all teams so know it, follow it, and live with it.

MMmmm problem is neither teams, nor drivers, nor race control understand what the rules are!

I am glad it is settled. Initially it was McLarens fault. They were the ones who ordered him to give Trulli's place back, they were the ones who wanted to know if it was all legal, Hamilton wanted to know, but they never got back to him. Secondly it was Hamiltons fault, how can you feel that that information was relevant for SpeedTV and not for the FIA race stewards???

I think the FIA need to take more time to evaluate and collect all information before a conclusion is reached.

As a Jarno Trulli fan, (previously a fan of Hamilton in 07 & 08) I am delighted that Jarno was awarded his 3rd place back. He is a true racer, not a cheat, liar, nor does he take foolish actions. He is a true racer & I think all will agree that he deserves more than one win in his 12/13 year Formula 1 career (provided by Renault).

Good luck Trulli this weekend. I expect a top 5 finish at least.

I was just about to shame Lewis Hamilton, but I think it's the team's fault. I read the transcript. Lewis Hamilton did not deliberately cheat. He probably deserves a penalty. But the guy's gutted.

Hamilton had no idea what to do in this situation. He's relied on the team to give him information about what to do. He thought he had overtaken the Toyota under Yellow Flags. The team told him to give the position back to Jarno, and then changed their mind. But Lewis had already obeyed the team's first command.

The team assured him that they were talking to the race director. They obviously didn't. So Lewis was betrayed by his team in this situation. They lied by reassuring him that they were talking to the race director, just to shut Lewis up.

I'm not supporting McLaren this Year, I'm supporting Red Bull. I just haven't worked out how to change my signature yet. I'm going for Vettel this year.

But, I will stand up for Lewis and say he is no cheat.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE RADIO TRANSMISSION
Lewis Hamilton: The Toyota went off in a line at the second corner, I overtook him, is that OK?
Team: Understood, Lewis. We'll confirm and get back to you.
LH: He was off the track. He went wide.
Team: Lewis, you need to allow the Toyota through. Allow the Toyota through now.
LH: OK.
LH: He's slowed right down in front of me.
Team: OK, Lewis. Stay ahead for the time being. Stay ahead. We will get back to you. We are talking to Charlie.
LH: I let him past already.
Team: OK, Lewis. That's fine. That's fine. Hold position. Hold position.
LH: Tell Charlie I already overtook him. I just let him past.
Team: I understand Lewis. We are checking. Now can we go to yellow G 5, yellow Golf 5.
LH: I don't have to let him past I should be able to take that position back, if he made a mistake.
Team: Yes, we understand Lewis. Let's just do it by the book. We are asking Charlie now. You are in P4. If you hold this position. Just keep it together...
...Team: OK, Lewis, this is the last lap. At the end of the lap the safety car will come in, you just proceed over the line without overtaking, without overtaking. We are looking into the Trulli thing, but just hold position.
