What possible use would mentioning the race be

As important as mentioning age or height in the description of someone who's committed a crime but probably easier for a victim or witness to determine.
I see no difference in using male/female and using black/white etc. in describing someone, PC has gone mad imo.
Would it be wrong to say what accent someone had? If they had Irish or Scottish accent?

I'm not the one here saying that describing someone as what they are is derogatory.

PC has gone mad your dead right, but it doesnt apply in this case because there is no positive side gained from mentioning race. in this case here or newspaper case, none, other then subtle hatemongering, which given the papers ive seen this in, makes sense. as for myownalias, i did say right off the bat that i didnt know whether to laugh or worry that he mentioned it, becuase im sure as hell he isnt racist, but that makes it even more strange that he included it?

I'm probably cynical but to some extent I think the media mentions details deliberately for judgement on the part of the reader. They won't sell papers if they're only going for the angle of looking for witnesses to the crime. They want people getting emotive, caring, which tends to be easier to do when you make someones blood boil and have them spewing in outrage.

It's easier to play with people's pre-conceptions and prejudices, how many people link to think and be challenged b y their newspaper?

Think generally, ethnic minorities, are over-represented in "bad news stories".

The Sun has the biggest circulation in Britain, and I'm pretty sure more people watch GMTV than newsnight.

Nope, I don't get your drift. By your reasoning it's pointless to give any description of a suspect at all and we would be reading reports of 'A person has been mugged by a person' As it it, suspects are often described by aprox. age and height, hair colour, skin colour, what clothes they were wearing or whatever else a witness or victim can remember. This information is often given out by the police in hope of getting useful information back from the public.

If someone with a Scottish accent had robbed a bank in London, do you think that accent would be mentioned in the newspaper report or not?

Now back to the reply too Jason that sent this thread spinning down the toilet, he was mearly giving a description and I do not think anything derogatory was meant by it. Way too much PC and judgement going on here.

First year in a while that I'm going: ugh! Not too excited about the Super Bowl with those two teams in it. Hope it's not a borefest because my off-button finger is itchy already.

My first in years aswell but I do not think it will be a boring game, considering how both played in their division championship, unless one teams brothers sub for them . We have a great meal planned though with homemade meatloaf, homemade mashed potatoes and sweet corn on the cob followed up with a Key Lime pie.
