Who’s the F1 heavyweight?
May 8, 2009 by James Allen

Picking up on the story yesterday about Fernando Alonso losing 5.5 kilos in bodyweight during the Bahrain GP, I mentioned that Nico Rosberg was telling us yesterday that he feels the rapid weight loss the drivers have undergone over the winter is contributing to them not having the reserves of energy and strength at the end of races.

I spoke to one of the leading driver trainers and he agrees with Rosberg’s point. Apparently, though, the important thing is how you lose the weight. If it’s too sudden then you lose the reserves and your energy patterns go all over the place. If it’s controlled and planned then it’s no problem.

Out of interest here are the weights of some of the leading drivers in F1, as compiled by one of my Italian colleagues,

Webber 75kg – he gained 2kg over the winter while nursing his broken leg
Kubica 70kg – he has lost 8 kilos since the 2007 season
Raikkonen – 69kg
Alonso – 66kg
Rosberg 66 kg – he has lost around 5 kilos over the winter, I’m told
Trulli – 64kg
Vettel 62kg
Heidfeld/ Massa 59kg

One of my readers posted a question the other day, could I imagine Juan Pablo Montoya coming back to F1?

Looking at the above table and what is required from drivers today in terms of weight control, I think we all know the answer to that..

as for McLarens i never talked them up did I? but as far as i can see they're right near a Ferrari..... funny that

Button again. i would laught if the medal system was in right now.... Button would be champion in no time soon by the way things are going! i would love to see Bernies reaction to that :hehe:

Cruel, cruel luck for Nakajima today, if only Alonso had messed up his final Q2 lap Naka could have been used to great effect in Q3.

And why are Williams running Nico heavy again? His car was good enough for at least P4 to P6.

Do Ferrari fans have short memories? I'm sure Ferrari haven't been doing to well recently. Everyone knew that the McLaren was going to be well off the pace at this race I estimated it to be 1 second I was wrong it was 0.851 seconds off. The last time the car was in Barcelona is was over 2.5 seconds off the pace so I would say the team has actually made some quite substantial gains around 1.7 seconds but if Brawn reckon they have gained 3 tenths the McLaren have actually improved the car by around 2 seconds. I would also like to point out as a McLaren fan when Ferrari were doing poorly I didn't come on here shouting about them and laughing at them because personally I think it shows very poor character for someone to do that.

VETTEL has a good chance to go for win, i think.

But what worries me is Massa behind him with the KERS....
he MIGHT tangle with Vettel or Barichello to the first corner...
and that, we dont want to see

of course, Vettel and Massa are my favourite drivers, with Buemi very close behind

on the side: i wonder if it is possible to compare Hamilton with Vettel... :lurker:

Another interesting qualifying session :D
I was a bit gutted that Button pulled that last lap out of the bag, since it shoved Vettel back to second (though second is none to shabby!), but OMG what a lap, especially when you consider that he was struggling a little bit before that.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Massa and his KERS don't tangle with Vettel. Well, I hope he doesn't tangle with anyone, cos that would make for a messy start!

You would have thought that Ferrari had learned their lesson with the whole Massa-going-out-in-Q3 incident, but apparently not...
