Question..can the wing be used at the start of the race? Which means everyone who's not on pole can stall the rear wing as they are all within a second of each other?

Apologies if this is a known fact...I've been away from my F1 desk lately.

I seem to remember something about it not being able to be used for the 1st x amount of laps.

Not for the first few laps (i think its first 2 but not so sure...)

what worries me is when teams start saying that they should of been able to use the rear wing but the stewards said they where not allowed

its electronicly activated i believe and there is sensors etc....

Dont worry, i have a basic understanding of physics . My question was that why is it harder to overtake with the wing in the low downforce setting which is what FRAFDPP was saying.

I was referring to down as low downforce setting.

This is F1, get with the aero lingo man, down is high and up is low... and throw a few million into it while you're at it. I loves me this sport!

To stop all the "I thinks" that we are all doing I found the rules

3.18 Driver adjustable bodywork :

3.18.1 The incidence of the rearmost and uppermost closed section described in Article 3.10.2 may be varied whilst the car is in motion provided :
- It comprises only one component that must be symmetrically arranged about the car centre line with a minimum width of 708mm.

- With the exception of minimal parts solely associated with adjustment of the section, no parts of the section in contact with the external airstream may be located any more than 355mm from of the car centre line.

- With the exception of any minimal parts solely associated with adjustment of the rearmost and uppermost section, two closed sections are used in the area described in Article 3.10.2.

- Any such variation of incidence maintains compliance with all of the bodywork regulations.

- When viewed from the side of the car at any longitudinal vertical cross section, the physical point of rotation of the rearmost and uppermost closed section must be fixed and located no more than 20mm below the upper extremity and no more than 20mm forward of the rear extremity of the area described in Article 3.10.2 at all times.

- The design is such that failure of the system will result in the uppermost closed section returning to the normal high incidence position.

- Any alteration of the incidence of the uppermost closed section may only be commanded by direct driver input and controlled using the control electronics specified in Article 8.2.

3.18.2 The adjustable bodywork may be activated by the driver at any time prior to the start of the race and, for the sole purpose of improving overtaking opportunities during the race, after the driver has completed a
minimum of two laps after the race start or following a safety car period.
The driver may only activate the adjustable bodywork in the race when he has been notified via the control electronics (see Article 8.2) that it is enabled. It will only be enabled if the driver is less than one second
behind another at any of the pre-determined positions around each circuit. The system will be disabled by the control electronics the first time the driver uses the brakes after he has activated the system. The FIA may, after consulting all competitors, adjust the above time proximity in order to ensure the stated purpose of the adjustable bodywork is met.

And therein lies a good hint of why it takes so much damned money to be in F1. At least for the driver, is sounds like you can set it at the beginning of the race and then forget about it until the little light comes on again to tell you that it's available. One thing I just realized though, is that there is no intermediate setting it's an on/off thing so it's down or up nothing in a mid type setting available so all of the angles will be predetermine per circuit. Even though the rules don't seem to explicitly forbid it.

This rear wing is, I feel, an example of what's wrong with these gimmicks. Its use is so heavily restricted and regulated, that whilst it might prompt more overtakes, it will also - crucially - make all those overtakes exactly the same.

The FIA doesn't understand our sport any more. It's not the number of overtakes that makes a race exciting, it's the variety of overtaking opportunities and attempts.

Seeing every car be blitzed on the back straight is going to be farcical.

Well, I also prefer those races when the cars finish exactly in the same order in what they were placed at the grid. It`s so exciting.

It's still better than if there is a guy who deserves to be in front puts it on pole and leads for the whole race until the last lap and loses it to the adjustable wing

Why don't we see it in action for a couple of races first...

The rules said they'd fiddle around with it to fine tune it so even the FIA expected flack right from the beginning, the problem is the winner will not be the one complaining. Maybe we'll have controversy right from the beginning this year!
