I don't blame them for trying to cash in on the Korean GP, it's a natural marketing move for them but don't confuse it for anything other than a marketing move.

In racing you've had independents that have developed a racing brand and then develop that into a manufacturing enterprise, or you have a manufacturer than wants to reinforce their brand's perception by sponsoring/developing and funding R&D for whatever racing series best suits the image they want.

Hyundai fit neither of these camps right now, and it's clear they're making a racing push.

20 or 30 years ago people would have smirked at the idea of Toyota in F1 too. :D

Yep  ! One thing us older dogs have learned is to never say never in racing.

I smirked when I read your comment of Hyundai in F1... it's just funny.

I smirked when i read your comment and about how you find it funny that one of the largest car manufacturers in the world would want to join Formula One.

And i laughed at your ignorance

Take a deep breath, or get a sense of humor. Did you read the whole post or just the bit where you wanted to point out an ugly American?

When Hyundai's only motorsport history is a short WRC stint, to consider them making a huge technological leap to F1 in the near future is at best a very VERY long shot. So you probably shouldn't be calling other people ignorant.

I dunno... I mean, they were well into rallying and were racing in Group C by the end of the 80's, and Group C cars were basically F1 cars with a full body kit...

This is coming from a guy that smirked at the idea of Hyundai in Formula 1....

but Kia has made a pretty big push into the Grand Am ST class (through Kinetic Motorsports) this year and their car steadily improved and they were a solid mid pack runner. They've also got a presence in Formula Drift. From a marketing standpoint it makes sense to start cementing an image with the youth and the street tuner market and then grow your racing image as they grow.

Seriously guys....if a company like Hyundai makes the decision to become involved in F1 as an engine supplier....it wont be a start-up operation. There are plenty of "rebranded" or acquired businesses that adopt a new brand...Meccachrome (Renault), Ilmor (Mercedes) as examples.

A company like Hyundai would either acquire the infrastructure and intellectual property of someone like Honda or Toyota's engine building departments.....or maybe just purchase a company like Cosworth.

It's all about branding and perception isn't it.

ok i should have gone a few years further back then :hehe: point i was trying to make is even though Honda has been involved in F1 for many years, there was a point when the Japanese auto industry was viewed as cheap and nasty just as the Korean auto industry did when it first came onto the world market. Though that is slowly changing which is why I think Bernie went to Korea because it is developing its auto industry and motorsport plays a big role in the marketing of the auto industry. Even though Hyundai or Kia dont have a big motorsport history as yet, Hounddub is correct in that to make an F1 outfit you can just buy your way into it.

Your nationality is completely irrelevant to me so really i dont know why you need to bring that into this.

And if you consider that humour you need to get out more.

Yes, if Hyundai were to announce that they were making an F1 engine program out of scratch it would be quite a large step. However in this context we are talking about Hyundai buying into existing infrastructure and management.

"we" are talking?

Your only previous post in the whole thread was a comment about your preference for Ford and not GM in F1.

Your second comment was to call me ignorant or arrogant for something that I found amusing, even though if you'd read my post I was stating how Hyundai seems to be making a racing push.

And I don't think anyone with your "signature" should be giving advice on someone's else quality of humor.
