Stefan to test car at Portimao this month

By Pablo Elizalde Tuesday, February 2nd 2010, 16:56 GMT

Stefan GP has announced it will test its first Formula 1 car later this month in Portugal, as it continues to push with its plans to race in the sport this year despite not having an entry.

Following today's announcement that the Serbia-based squad will send equipment to Bahrain for the first of the season, the team said it will test its car at Portimao on 25-28 February.

Stefan GP said it will unveil the Stefan S-01 before the tests.

AUTOSPORT has learned former Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima will be one of the team's drivers.

Stefan GP said its car has been developed by the team and with technical support from Toyota, with which is has agreed a technical partnership.

The engine it will use is the Stefan RG-01, also serviced by Toyota.

The team said it will be testing two drivers at Portimao.

Stefan GP released a picture of its offices, in which team owner Zoran Stefanovich can be seen with former McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan.

Not surprising that Crashajima is back, and I bet he will have been used as part of the deal for Stefan to acquire the Toyota chassis...

I hope he clumsily bins it coming out of the pits on cold tyres and then gets a rollocking for it. :D

Yeah, he'll only be in cause of Toyota. Watch him be immensely good next season now.:hehe: It's a weird one though, cause they have ex-Toyota engineers at the team too. Methinks it's a clever way of Toyota being able to continue to gain new data for use elsewhere in the company, for low costs...

Ah you know Nakajima, he'll top all of the practice sessions (if Stefan got into any races) and then come Qualifying he'd be out in Q1.

Is the Stefan GP toyota powered?

might be a cheap way for them to remain in F1..

As I understand it, it's running a Stefan GP-badged engine, That engine is the Toyota Powerplant by a new name.

Also, I have heard (i think from James Allen, either him or Autosport) that the powers that be are incredibly unhappy about the involvement of Texeira. Bernie, Jean & Co. do not want him in F1, and they don't want A1GP being associated with F1. It's possible they will find a way to remove Texeira's team even if they do manage to put together an actual entry - which at this stage seems admittedly unlikely. Additional resistance could come from Ferrari. After all, A1GP owes them a lot of money and they probably won't like Texeira splashing a load of dosh on an F1 Team instead of paying them.

It's all adding up it seems... :scratchchin:

And yeah, the engine will basically be the previous Toyota design, but built/maintained by whoever at Stefan (who actually appear to be ex Toyota engine department people judging by the article). Same as how the old Renault/Meccachrome/etc thing went down.

I hope Campos don't get barred from F1 just because of Texeira, afterall isn't Bernie the one who wanted Bruno Senna in F1 just as much as we all do? Mind you having said that if Campos got banned because Bernie, Todt and co. said No, Bernie will probably have Senna put in the StefanGP alongside Nakajima.

Yeah, that's my assumption too. It'd probably be Bernie's price to Stefan for putting them in.

A very good price though if Senna does well. :)

Senna better get a seat or i will properly explode. Why can't campos get backing from someone else instead? I thought there were a few parties looking to buy them?

Ugh, and i can't believe Nakajima will get a seat too. Its totally ridiculous. He's not even remotely fast in any way.

Having a reliable team that will show up to races is more important than having Bruno Senna. The fact that they have already started shipping their equipment out to Bahrain whilst Campos are yet to reveal their car or a second driver is promising for Stefan GP.
