Ultimate it's all ifs and buts... the reason why McLaren got punished and Renault didn't is because of the publicity that the McLaren spygate got from the press. If it wasn't for the media pushing the McLaren case into the spotlight, more than likely nothing would have happened in the McLaren case because no-one would have known about it.

Nooooooooooooo. It was cos MM was out to get Ron, he was saving Briatore for later

Heh, problem is, if that were actually true Mosley would have just taken out Flabio at the earliest opportunity and not waited around two years for the Piquet scandal. :hehe:

You're serious? :hehe:

Yes I am serious; I really believe that none of this would have happened if it wasn't for the press blowing it out of proportion... once the spygate scandal hit the headlines the FIA had no option but to act. Does anyone seriously believe this is the first time this has happened in F1? Espionage is as much a part of F1 as the racing on the track!

I think it was because of the large number documents in possession of of McLaren and all the supporting evidence, simple as. That is what spurred all the media coverage, after all.

Marilyn Manson? Mickey Mouse? Marilyn Monroe?

These days nothing stays hidden. Plus Ferrari would have seen to it that proper investigatory and disciplinary steps were undertaken even w/o the press.

That's my whole point, I don't deny that McLaren were in possession of the Ferrari data, but the fine and punishment came from the massive media publicity, meaning it could no longer be swept under the carpet, action had to be taken or else it would seem that F1 is a sport that allowed cheaters to compete. Let's face it, controversy like this isn't good for the image of Formula 1, so I doubt they wanted the information about McLaren spygate controversy getting out!

No one else remember Max having a rant on tv after the punnishment was announced? It was pretty obvious then that he'd wanted a ban and didn't get his way.

Banning McLaren that would have been a good idea ... NOT

But you have to give the ferrari dudes something to smile about
