I think the problems is that even though most cars in the UK now can safely travel at 100mph there is still 70 year olds in austin princesses around the pull out into the outside lane doing 50

Old people need to understand that a car tyre has lateral grip whilst driving.

That all depend's upon what/who you consider old and the demographic's also would play apart in how it is taken.

Old is a state of mind. My Old man is 63 and still drives like a loon but there does seem to be a lot of 70+ year old women who for some reason think that a car like the Daewoo Matiz is acceptable. which it is for around town etc. The other day I got stuck behind one such blue rince chicanes (not sure if many of the brits would know the road between Ross on Why and Cheltnam) the road is a 60mph with a lot of fast flowing corners. A real drivers road. I have done the route averaging erm 60mph give or take a bit. there is no where to overtake on the road really because of the bends and very little straighs that are long enough. any way, 500 meters into the 14 mile road I end up behind miss blue rince that clashes with her burn orange cereal box on biscuit tin lid wheels. average speed of trip 27mph. these people should not be on the flipping road. one corner that can be taken easily doing 50, she slowed from 35 on approach to 15 miles an hour.

Saying that, I think that there should be a compulary road awareness test for everyone every 5 years or so to stop this sort of thing. I remember when I was growing up I worked in a Petrol Station in the middle of a town. once a week these people turned up in an Austin Metro. The couple in the car must of weight twice that of the car. (I am not have a go at larger people here as I am 21st) it would take them 10-15 minutes from them stopping at the pump to picking up the nozle for the fuel because they had to swing one leg out at a time and then have a rest, before the final onslaught that was getting there bums of the seat. I have to think what would happen if someone run out in front of them when they are driving, would they have the energy, fitness to get there feet onto the brake pedal within 50 - 60 meters? what if they where knackered out after a hard gear change.

Another thing that annoys me is 17 year old boy racers. Big exhaust, 1.2 Corsa, WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, 90 mph, and oh no there is a corner, slow to 20 to go around the corner WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA, WHAAAAAAAAAA. WHAWHAWHAWHAWHA, oops change gear WHAAAAAAAAA, BRAKE there is a corner. Oh 17 year old child tyres have Lateral grip it means that a car will corner. then again they would not be able to hear you because of the 2 Terrawatts of Bass that they have in the boot. with standard mids and tweeters. where is the sound quality in that!!!!!

PEOPLE LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED ON THE ROAD.

People over 70 should get tested every 6 months like airline pilots. If they fail the tests, license's gone. We don't allow 14-year olds to drive, so why should half-dead ones with a history of heart attacks, seizures and on potent pain killers and what not be on the roads?

I remember a certain gentleman who at close to 70yr's old could drive circle's around these so called 'hot shoe's'. I do agree though that the mind may still be sharp but physical reaction's are not what they used to be. Getting old suck's and everyone here is eventually gonna be there so I say tread softly.

that is why I think people should be tested. I am sure the goverment would like th idea as well as it could become another stealth tax. my ex wifes nan used to cancel her driver medical if she was having an off day etc... she would still drive on an off day though

I agree concerning the testing requirement's I just did not feel like reading the book you wrote .

oh and suprisingly it has nothing to do with cars yet either. if JK Rowling can make a fortune from writing poo I might as well try.
