I think they knew the regulations well-enough (and certainly better than McLaren). As DD says, as soon as they realised Hamilton had picked up his pace again Jarno slowed down to give the position back because it was now apparent that Trulli passing Hamilton was not legal.
Toyota's not knowing the regulations is a pretty important part of the discussion. As is the lack of clarity in the regulations themselves. But sidestepping particular issues is exactly the sort of intellectual dishonesty that happens when it comes to discussing McLaren.
