From F1 Live:

Bernie Ecclestone seems keen that China retains its Grand Prix beyond the looming expiry of its contract.

An official of the loss-making event had said an 'assessment' is taking place as to whether Shanghai will continue hosting a race in 2011.

But Ecclestone, F1's CEO, said Chinese officials have requested a contract extension be sent.

"We have a contract until 2010 with an option for five years after that," the 78-year-old told the Financial Times.

"We will talk to them about it, and meet up and see how we can help them," he added.

Ecclestone clarified that Qiu Weichang, who made the comments about the dubious future of the Chinese Grand Prix, works for the race promoter, rather than for the actual decision-making government.

Oh yes Bernie, offer help to one of the dullest races on the calendar so you can keep it on the calendar and in the meantime just backhand the more exciting and legendary races so they drop off the calendar.

Do you think the Chinese actually like Formula 1?
#81273
I'll extend that point with -
DO you think the peoples of the likes of Bahrain, Malaysia, Turkey, even the proposed India, actually like F1 THAT MUCH in comparison with the other countries that the seasons goes to?

I mean surely not in the case of Europe but even so.
Stage races in these countries if you must - but don't bother building grandstands, don't need them :P

For now Australia has a GP - I was listing Aussieland just as a preventive measure :P:thumbup:

Every team that actually makes an effort to put together an F1 operation should be allowed in and given a chance. The more the merrier - that will give Honda, Williams and Force India (did I just list those 3 teams in one and the same context?? :yikes: ) the opportunity to shine :P
Who are you to declare which manufacturer 'deserves' to be in F1?

I cant understand why F1 hasnt hit off in china. its popular in neighbouring countries such as Japan and malaysia..

Its Like that Rolling Stones Gig in China. Tickets were too expensive for the locals but reasonable for europeans etc. And so a big majority of the people who went were actually not chinese.

Maybe the chinese should look into the price of the tickets and make it reasonable for the locals, not BE.

You cant make it reasonable for the locals when a 30-45 euro ticket is way out of their range already. The thing is China is hugely agricultural and huge swatch of its population are so poor that they cannot even conceive of traveling and going to these events.
Its popular in Japan because by comparison it has a huge standard of living and its a very technically advanced nation.

The thing about busing people in is to fill stands so they can say "we were at 90% capacity". I witnessed similar events in Eastern Europe in the 80s at soccer and rugby games. Plus under communism you can dictate that people do whatever you tell them during work hours, so several times, our "duty" was to go to the game rather than work. They would bus people from work and enter for free. Sure tickets were a bargain by Western Europe standards, but still prohibitively expensive for the locals. If they turn it into a night race, there goes your ability to bus people in and also a lot of the advertising on banners and signs around that would no longer be visible. Plus it requires an even bigger investment for a non guaranteed future for the track.

It was weird living there, but you witness communism first hand and really understand how it works and why it really only works well in a relatively technologically backwards state like China with a huge relatively uneducated agrarian and resource mining population.

South Africa, Mexico, Argentina, Moscow, India, dare I say Australia(?), South Korea (I'd like to see Hyundai in F1 in some role)...

There should be a race somewhere in Scandinavia, too. :)

Yeah, I was thinking of Finland when coming up with my list - simply because of all the good Finnish drivers and the great interest in motorsports up there in moose country. However, I doubt they'd be able to pull it off.

1000 Lakes Grand Prix!

The new Autódromo Internacional do Algarve looks pretty good in my opinion. The older Estoril is still a very good circuit.

I have this bad feeling that place will develop into a 'new Barcelona' and provide boring races if all the teams end up doing a lot of testing there (which has been heavily hinted at) - although these new cars may change all that. That track looks like a cross between Estoril and Barcelona anyway... can anyone else see that?

Please just leave F1 Bernie, you get rid of an excellent track with produces great racing and then you want to keep the 1 of the boring tracks.

well I see F1 as the pinnacle of motorsport, what have Hyundai done in the motorsport world to deserve a spot in F1? They cant even make quality family cars and what F1 doesnt need is just another car make entering F1 just for the image so they can sell shitty family cars!

They've been building their own cars for 34 years, their own motors since 17 years - the Genesis is not bad at all...
What has Force India done to 'deserve' a spot in F1? Oh I forgot, they're sluts and switch engines like panties.

so what have they done on the motorsport front?

and comparing the likes of Force India or Redbull to another car make entering is not the same. They are technically privateer teams something F1 has always had. These teams were started by people with a passion for the sport.
