It would mean that if driver A finished 2nd in every race and driver B only drove in one race and won it then Driver B would finish ahead of driver A in the WDC.

True, but its not very likely that would happen, as it would mean that a different driver would have to finish first every race.

Nope - it could happen very easily: Let's say FM and LH win the majority of the races among them, RK runs second in almost all races, FA wins one race and the rest of the season he doesn't finish on the podium or even in the points. FA would be in front of RK - not very fair...

Yeh it needs to say the same because teams would go for luck wins i.e Singapore they'd pit at weird times to get the win incase of sc if they were a back team.

just leave alone it works its fair massa and hamilton have been the two best drivers

I'd increase the points advantage of the winner by one, so that the points were handed out like so:

11
8
6
5
4
3
2
1

That way, there's a little more incentive to win and the guy who wins most races actually gets some kind of advantage for it. A gap of four between first and second was too much, but perhaps two is too little.

thats what i think

i posted before, it would have worked out really well for alonso and piquet this year, which isnt fair

how can someone who has this much time in f1 think this is an idea,

i just dont think its serious, otherwise ecclestone is a :tard: and he clearly cant be cause hes mega rich

but then, canada has been removed....... :tard:

Ok, now this I really don't like! Turning into a Mickey Mouse Go Kart day.

Bernie Ecclestone is confident his plan to replace the current points system with Olympic Games-style 'medals' will be introduced in time for the 2009 season opener.

The F1 Chief Executive revealed recently he wants the drivers on the podium to be presented gold, silver and bronze medals, rather than awarded ten, eight and six points respectively.

The change, he argues, will rid the sport of the situation of the 2008 series finale in Brazil, where Lewis Hamilton was able to finish just fifth and still be crowned world champion.

If Ecclestone's new system had been in place, the McLaren driver and Felipe Massa would have been tied on five gold medals apiece, setting up a dash to be first to the chequered flag and the title.

It is believed that points will still be awarded to the teams for the constructors' championship on the basis of the current system.

Drivers finishing races 'out of the medals', meanwhile, will not score points, but their finishing positions over the season will determine their championship ranking.

Ecclestone, 78, told The Times: "The FIA and all the teams are behind it and it will be done."

He insists that the system will ensure that the emphasis of the front-running drivers' approach to races will be on winning, rather than scoring good points.

"The whole point will be, when they get to Melbourne for the first race, the guys will want to leave there with a gold medal. They (will not) want to leave with ten, eight or six points," Ecclestone said.

The matter has been discussed by FIA President Max Mosley, but the details are yet to be worked out.

Ecclestone's system will require ratification by the World Motor Sport Council at its December meeting

Forget the proper fans who understand the concept of a points system, and cater for monkeys and children. I'll have to switch to Nascar and Indy, at least they have points system. Bernie you old fart, please go away.

Just a poorly conceived idea IMO. Still, this might go through, as a gimme in lieu of the teams telling them where to stick with regards standardisation.

Its really silly. Besides, racing isn't really allowed these days - there'll probably be so many 'avoidable' incidents because the drivers are basically forced to gun for the podium no matter what only to be penalised and stripped of medals. And what will Lewis do with his new found maturity if he's sitting in fourth?
The interpretation of the table will be a nightmare.
I doubt theres been any proper thought given to this, and its just another whim by an over-the-hill dictator

Who's your son? lol. ok ok. see edit.

Seriously though - what do you think of these happenings?

I think it's another attempt to keep a black driver from winning the WDC again.

What? how?

the medal system would reward those who race consistantly in the top 3, which is kind of a good Idea...

But I dont agree with it because it doesnt give anything to the hard work the other drivers and teams put into F1. A driver could finish 4th in all 18 races and come out with nothing. Its kind of elitist to the top drivers. How would budget teams be able to achieve anything?
