I would certainly hope it was Kovalainen letting him past in terms of the potential issues team orders would cause, but I also think that Kovalainen should have fought for that position. It's only half-way through the season and he needs to score as many points as he can to get closer to the top drivers.

McLaren have always let their drivers race at this stage of the season, or later. For example, Coulthard was allowed to win the 1999 Belgian Grand Prix, despite it making Hakkinen's title chase a little tricky. You also have to consider other factors. First, Hamilton needed to pull out a big gap to Massa so he could pit and get out ahead of him. He was also to do this on the softer tyres, which McLaren and Hamilton are famous for chewing up. Being behind another car makes increases your tyre ware, due to sliding etc.. Basically, Hamilton's strategy would have been buggered, not even getting so much as a podium, and Massa would have stolen an undeserved win. Second, Formula One is a team game. Kovalainen has not done the job this season and has virtually no chance of winning the title. McLaren have to look after their own interests in terms of both titles and keeping their profile high, particular at Mercedes' home Grand Prix. Third, Kovalainen would have been slower fending off Hamilton, which would actually damage his own interests. Kovalainen was absolutely right to allow Hamilton to pass so easily.

[Heifeld is] gradually putting himself in to the same position as Kubica as an outside title-threat.

Well, he would do if could qualify well. That way every Grand Prix would not be an uphill battle. Heidfeld now really needs to get his act together in qualifying. Other drivers adapt, so it's time for him to step up to the plate. You would hardly think that at the beginning of March people were saying Kubica would struggle because of the traction control ban.

Hamilton did extremely well all weekend. He did well in practise, showing some of his speed, but keeping his powder dry for the rest of the weekend. His qualifying lap was absolutely brilliant; a great piece of intelligent driving. The lead he built up in the race was well deserved, and building up another again after the safety car came out was excellent work. Fair enough, Kovalainen, Massa and Piquet were hardly trying their best to stop him getting by, but anything other than Hamilton win would have been an injustice given Hamilton's race speed and overall performance throughout the weekend.

Maybe so. But I think that the problem lies with the very core of his driving style and, when it comes to any skill, that's the hardest part to alter in order to adapt. Heidfeld's style is smooth, whilst Kubica's is aggressive, and as you can see the car responds to Kubica's style better. If you've been doing something the same way for years and years and have enjoyed success with it, it's very hard to change, even if it is something you need to do.

In addition to that, his lap was looking fast enough at the time for him to make it through to Q3, but he made that mistake in the hairpin. Without that, he should easily have made it through.

I'll refer to this your post when down the road people are screaming foul if Ferrari pulls such a stunt.

A stunt was not pulled. How McLaren operate is in no way comparable to how Ferrari and Schumacher operated. Kovalainen is no mug. Perhaps next year when he gets himself together will be needing a similar favour from Hamilton. Have you any evidence (that is unknown to the FIA) that McLaren used illegal team orders? As I said in the post you quoted, other things were at stake as well. Feel free to quote the post when you like.

I find your third point especially ambivalent: that would be an excuse for ANY driver to let his teammate through, a card blanche so to speak.

An epic drive. If he can keep his head and find the consistency he had at the start of last season he could easily be one of the best ever.

It's only his second year in F1 so it's premature to say he could be "one of the best ever". He may very well win the WDC but it's going to take atleast another 5+yr's before he can even be considered as one of the best and that all depend's on his record.

Sometimes they're true and die hard Hammy fans get affended and take it personally and act like you should be hanged for speaking the truth.
