There used to be a Portuguese GP at Estoril. They got rid of it in the early 1990s. I can't remember exactly which year but I remember Nigel Mansell winning there for Ferrari in 1990 when the race was stopped 10 laps before the end because of a red flag.

Yes, of course - Estoril - thanks for reminding me AKR

[quoteDenthúl] Well, I never really understood the European GP, either. I just saw it as a way to fit both German circuits in there, since I love both. Though, I do remember now that they'll be alternating between the two, much like Suzuka and Fuji from '09, so it isn't necessary. As for Portugal, their last GP was held there in 1996. It was at Estoril. They've also had GPs in Boavista, Cascais and Monsanto. But you're definitely right about there being many places to choose from.

I also missed Turkey and Hungary off my list. I like those two, as well.

Thing is, there are so many circuits to choose from, that it would probably be a good idea if there were a core set of GPs (Australia, Britain, Brazil, USA, Canada, Monaco and Belgium, for example) that didn't change each year and then all the others could be held at various circuits each time round. I actually think that would help to spread the sport more and also be more challenging for the drivers. If you drive the same circuit every year for five years or so, you get quite used to it and it gives you a bit of an advantage. An ever-changing calendar presents a whole new set of challenges, such as car set-ups and drivers learning the braking and turning points.[quote]

yes I agree with that Denthúl - good idea - anyone know Bernies 'phone number?

Thanks. But I doubt that, even if it somehow made its way to the top of F1, it would be considered. There's little chance of it being implemented, because a lot of those circuits probably wouldn't pay up for Bernie :/

They got rid of it in 1997 after it failed numerous safety inspections, it was due to host the final round of the 1997 season but then was moved to Jerez. I remember Mansell also got black flagged twice at this circuit in 1989 and 1991, both for pit-stop calamaties.

Getting up at 4am for the opening race in Melbourne is all part of the experience, IMO. You can't miss it - as it's the first real test for all the work that's gone on during winter. Testing times mean nothing.

It will be a sad, sad day if they take Melbourne off the schedule. Once again, not unlike the Premiership, decisions are entirely based around money, not what the fans and supporters want.

I think we all ought to collectively put our thoughts together and send a letter to Bernie asking him to reconsider and to keep F1 at Melbourne and Silverstone. It may not work, but it may at least make him think for a moment that F1 wouldn't be the same without fans having to get up early to watch races in Australia, Japan et al.

Funnily enough, I started penning out my thoughts on such issues last night whilst I had only a pen and a scrap of paper available to me. But I doubt that it'd be listened to even if I put both my English GCSEs to full use... :(

I doubt that would happen, because most people wouldn't buy Sky Sports just for the Formula 1, and many people don't have Sky to begin with. So I think that revenue generated from companies like ITV or the BBC will always be greater than what could be made from Sky.

People buy it for the (boring, fixed and predictable) Barclays Premiership. Would be nice though if it meant Ben Edwards and John Watson ended up commentating on it though as they used to do on Eurosport and F1 Digital. :)

Replacing Australia with Russia?
By Forumula1.com on Saturday, February 9, 2008
Filed Under: F1 News

According to the latest rumours, Bernie Ecclestone is looking to scrap the Australian Grand Prix in favour of a Russian Grand Prix.

Melbourne bosses have recently come under fire from Ecclestone for not wanting to turn their race into a night race after 2010. British newspaper the Daily Mirror has now claimed that Ecclestone will be travelling to St. Petersburg in the near future to discuss the possibility of replacing the Australian Grand Prix with a race in Russia from 2010 onwards.

The paper has claimed that Ecclestone will be meeting with St. Petersburgs’ governor, and possibly even the president Vladimir Putin, for talks about building a new circuit in the country.

It is not the first time that Russian F1 Grand Prix rumours have surfaced, but it appears these latest rumours have a little more substance behind them. “Nothing is done yet,â€
