Race is ON

The Indian Grand Prix will go ahead, according to race organisers, despite the country's highest court hearing a petition on Friday to have it cancelled over tax issues.

The Supreme Court will hear the case after campaigner Amit Kumar accused race promoters Jaypee Sports International (JPSI) of not paying entertainment taxes in full for the 2012 race.

Indian motorsports chief Vicky Chandhok said: "The race will go on. There's absolutely no doubt about that.

"This has happened many times before. You've had people trying to stop cricket matches...our justice system is pretty strong that no sporting event should be stopped.

"It's a civil matter, let it be heard in court as long as it takes and that's it. No worries," added Chandhok who heads the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI).

Kumar had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in 2011 arguing Formula One was not sport but entertainment and should not be exempted from entertainment taxes.

JPSI spokesman Askari Zaidi said they would adhere to the court order and attend.

"A PIL was filed earlier also and whatever the court had asked to do, we did," Zaidi said.

"The court had asked us to deposit a certain amount (of money), that was deposited. Now if somebody goes to court again, we'd do whatever the court tells us.

The Indian Grand Prix has been dropped from next year's calendar but the promoters are optimistic of a return in 2015.

I'd be stunned if this stopped the race, even if it went that way in the courtroom surely either an appeal would be made for after the GP or Bernie would give them the money requested - the implications of no race (and Vettel being made world champion without driving for it) would be much worse to Ecclestone and FOM than the cost of whatever this tax charge is.

Hmm. I know someone that would disagree with that ...... :hehe:

Are you saying Kumar is a filthy shameless deceiver and distorter of the facts?

afterall F1 states itself to be a sport and therefore the facts are that it is a sport and the paying audience are incidental

maybe the Indian government need to employ more high school grads

Perez is looking pretty damned tidy in FP2. He was lying in second place at one point.

2nd race in a row that Williams have had issues with wheels falling off. Ted Kravitz thinks the FIA could throw the book at them as its 2 races in a row now. Claire Williams is quite concerned apparently.

Also looks like Red Bull have some tyre issues with the softs, as Newey was talking to the Pirelli technicians and Paul Hembry also had to visit the Red Bull garage

Lewis and Nico both concede they are fighting for third spot on the podium, such is the Red Bull advantage.

Shame RBR are suddenly having two drivers both exploiting the advantage of the car. Normally, when Webber has his problems it means there are normally 2 spots on the podium up for grabs, but since Singapore Webber is suddenly driving like he did in 2010 when he matched Seb
