Very high suicide rate in Finland.

Isn't it completely dark there like 16 months a year?

Not quite, but close, especially near the arctic circle. Hence the booze problem, but also the wild nights/days/whatever-it's-so-messed-up in the sauna.

I have this urge to go to an Arctic place in winter, where its dark all the time and you can see the northern lights and
polar bears and go on dog sleds. Ive just read a ghost story set in the Spitzbergen, very scary. And it mentioned a place called Longyearbyn, and that's where I want to go.

Looking at the suicide rates (excluding the top 5 countries), it seems roughly that the rate of how developed a country is is proportional to the number of suicides.... :scratchchin:

More developed - less activity and brainpower needed in the nation (since big brother provides) - less things to think about - how bout kill myself?

You're high on somtin'? Such a fooked up conclusion as yours couldn't even be drawn up if you hand-picked a few countries from the list rather than looking at the whole picture.

Suicide rates are quite high amoung rural communities in Pakistan and India.

Someone commits suicide out of desperation, not because they don't have enough to think about! It is a truly terrible thing to happen in a family, especially when it happens to the last person you'd expect.

I didn't literally mean that someone has not enough to 'think about'...but anyway this discussion is above you no offense.

We get it - you don't like me. Whoop-de-doo, no one cares.

An unexpected suicide happened in my family about 7 years ago so I think I know more than you think.

You as well? The company I work for has a base in Tromso - I could be easily persuaded to go and work there should the opportunity arise. No polar bears roaming wild but it should have the northern lights and dog sleads covered. :cloud9:

Go for it Andrew if you get the chance! what an opportunity!!

I'd love to see the Northern Lights too. Let's have a forum trip there :hehe:

Suicide, hmm, I guess more advanced countries have different social pressures, less developed countries are far more social homogeneous, no?

If the opportunity arrises I will. One of the supervisors was offered a 2 year job in Azerbaijan but the didn't take it for personal reasons.

However, I suspect this forum isn't available in Norway based on the lack of Norwegian members.

This isn't about me liking you or not, who cares about that? If you respond to a post while quoting me you're damn right I'm going to say what I think as well. And I'm not talking about feelings about someone committing suicide, I'm talking about an observation based on some rough statistics on wikipedia. I concluded something pretty generic from that, and welcome other educated opinions which disagree with mine. So lay off this "you dont like me boo hoo i care i dont care" bullsh*t, its boring as hell.

Cry me a river. You seem to dish them out well, learn to take them equally.

Could we get back to the thread please? Geez. My last wasted reply until someone worth it responds.

:director: Me thinks the two of you are awfully close to a fishing trip together, Brokeback Mountain style.

DD...seriously, did you check out that list? What do you think...major european countries, the developed part of Americas, a few key developed Asian nations? And what can you find below the Top 50 apart from the UK? :whip:

Sorry but that is the most stupidest thing I've read so far in 2013.

Jeez, all I keep hearing is its stupid its stupid but it would be cool if there were some legit counter arguments. I've put my points forward, though its funny to see the ones coming back is 'youre stupid youre stupid'. :hehe:

Suicide is probably caused by having too much to think about, seeing as the act achieves the opposite more advanced societies have a greater range of options available, more pressure to succeed.

I disagree with the big brother argument too, the most advanced countries are liberal, capitalist and consumerist in nature.

It's what happens when someone feels they have no other option open to them and they can't cope with whatever pressure they are experiencing in their life. I don't believe it happens more in "developed" countries, though I would wager that it is more widely reported than in "undeveloped" countries. I may be wrong, but is it not one of those things that is considered dishonourable in some cultures?

Sure, most religions condemn suicide.

I recall the NHS website stating a theory that suicide is caused by a combination of 3 factors, "the belief (usually mistaken) that no one loves them, the belief (again usually mistaken) that others will be better of without them and fearlessness towards pain and death.
