They rely too much on aero and not enough on mech grip.
Swap those and then we talk qualifying.
In fact also lose any aero trickery, like DRS, DDRS, TDRS, passive DDRS, exhaust tricks, make them have 2 round tailpipes that extend past the rear bodywork, back to basics. Lets see the drivers show off for once.

If that's what you want, you might as well just run a spec series...

I like the proposal in the opening post but you would need to have cars doing their in and out laps at the same time so we aren't waiting 4 minutes for the entertainment to begin again.

Obviously there is danger of impeding someone but if the teams just told their driver where the fast car was it would be fine.

You know, I thought it was mutilation as well!!

every time I read the title of this thread I read it as mutilation.

Same!

To the original idea.. i respect your reasons and can see the benefits to your idea, but have to agree with some of the other folks here, it is essentially taking the gambling element out of the team's hands and putting it in the hands of fate.. the reckless cowboy that he is.

If you wanted to see each car's hot lap, maybe the FIA could activate in car footage for all 24 so that you can watch the lap from the seat of your favourite driver after Quali is done? Not sure if there would be any technical blocks here, i think in the race you can only ride on board with 2 or 3 at a time.. not sure if they would go to the effort for the few hardcore fans that would use it though..

You make no sense. Nothing in there says anything about specifying dimensions or engines or wheelbases or positioning of components or anything. There's tons of freedom in what I propose.
