Yep, a piece of plastic with some fancy electronics will never be better than a real book, which doesn't need batteries.

I got a kindle for xmas, and behold! It is like crack.

 Im also addicted to downloading books. Way faster than I can read them! And all of them free or costing less than a pound. I have sessions at it. :D I now have a rule that I read one modern/easy reading novel followed by a classic. So its making me read more worthwhile books. The latest was 'The picutre of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde. Ive seen the play before but hadnt read the book. Loved it! And recently watched the film on tele.
Sennaville we'll have to swap kindle recommendations.

And me please :) I got a Kindle for Christmas and I'm loving it. Got a lot of random free books to work my way through, plus it's really useful for my knitting patterns (sad, I know :hehe: ). I love the fact there are so many free/very cheap books and that it's so easy to download them.

I still do love the feel of a proper book though and I still buy proper books from my favourite authors.

Welcome to the kindle club!!
Yes, like you, I still buy my favourite authors in book form (where I want to have the set)and new publications arent any cheaper electronically anyway. But the Kindle has definately widened my reading. Its so cheap...or no cost, just to try them. Love it :)

It'd be interesting to start a poll: Kindle VS Books.

I'm still more than happy buying and collecting books... plus the pages always smell nice too. Added bonus.

But I know kindles have also got people into reading more, which IMO, is only a good thing. So I'm not writing them off.

It's like these keep fit games for X-stations, playboxes and wees. What did people do for keeping fit before these computer things? Just shows that people will do anything if they have a fancy toy to do it with so that they can keep up with the neighbours.

There's a place for both IMO. For my Dad, who has just gone off on a month's holiday, a book reader is a great idea because he doesn't need to lug around loads of heavy books in his luggage. I also like my Kindle because I can flick between books depending on my mood.

However I'm also nosey and I love looking at other people's bookshelves to see what they are reading. I also love picking up second hand books as they introduce me to new authors - I guess the same could be said of some of the cheap/free books on Amazon but the browsing experience just isn't the same.

Yes I use both. Definately a place for both. Excellent for travelling. And whilst browzing through the E-shop isnt the same as browsing a book shop , it can be done at any time. I often go on for a browse late at night and end up downloading books id never have thought of.
I think its a little narrow minded to write off either real book or kindle. They compliment each other.

I think in an idealized world they compliment each other, but the reality is that the future belongs to e readers. Convenience ultimately wins over nostalgia as generations grow up with the new technology.

This topic parallels what happened in the music industry. We're all nostalgic of playing records and organizing our CDs.

Yes I agree. The world moves on. There will be people who continue to collect 'real' books, but I think they will be viewed more as an art form than a convenience.

I feel I want to keep collecting real books for a good while yet. I fancy having a display such as this in my house when I'm retired... I'm half way there already 8-)

How can unnecessary technology replace something as fantastic as a library like that?!

Shall we go back to using an abacus since a calculator is unnecessary really.

Well a calculator is a necessary tool as it improves on what was previously there.

 I've always wanted to buy a house with a library. I currently have one bookcase so it might take me some time to fill :hehe:

Anyway...back sort of on track. I'm currently reading Origins (Spinward Fringe) by Randolph Lalonde (free download for Kindle) as it was recommended to me. It's OK. I'm hoping it gets a bit better as it hasn't really grabbed me yet.

My books that I've amassed throughout my life are spread over a few bookcases / shelves in both my home in Lancashire and also my lodging in London. I'd love to see them altogether though... it'd make me appear a very learned man! 8-)
