Realised I have invested almost five years pursuing the wrong career path and that there's no way I will ever enjoy this job again.

All jobs are . Just some are less than others and the rewards are a lot better.

My job's not exactly the best but it pays the bills and it's paying me enough to let me think seriously about a mortgage. Sod it, it's only a job.

I think your wrong, I used to love my job. Then one day got up and thought, I have had enough of it. then it became a job

For me, the job is the thing you have to go to every working day, and you can't live without it. So i'm trying to bust my bottom to make sure that part of my life is working well. I already worked enough shitty, horrible jobs in my (moderately short) life to ever want to settle for that.

I don't believe that to be true. I think it's possible to find something that you would genuinely enjoy doing as a career, I'm just not entirely sure what that thing would be for me (well, other than driving F1 cars... ). I'm interested in science, especially anything related to space, and I also enjoy mathematics and chemistry. But I don't really know what kind of career I can build from that.

Dare to (or at least try to) live the dream, that's all i can say. There's a SHITLOAD of careers you can build off maths and chemistry dude! Become an engine designer for one...
