Montreal fills the grandstands in qualifying. I guess I'm using a long yardstick. It's nice to see the drivers having fun though at a circuit and be able to go sploring the US of A a little.

I believe Silverstone was a sellout this year on race day and either sold out or pretty close for quali.

Oh right, I was in Club Silverstone (Becketts) and the small uncovered stand opposite (exit of the Village onto Wellington straight) wasn't full, but is that corporate/hospitality seating rather than public? Also the Club Silverstone ssection in Becketts wasn't full either.

Club Silverstone is hospitality. I was in village A, so not far away . I've watched from Becketts a lot, good viewing from there. Next to my grandstand going towards Wellington was the other village stand, a covered one, beyond that I didn't think there was another one, so maybe it's hospitality.

Theres like a really small one on the exit of the loop onto the Wellington straight that has no roof - im not sure its for public as its not on the map, but barely anyone was in there all weekend.

As for club silverstone, its halfway between general grandstand access and hospitality. I quite like it and the 3 day seat is really useful especially on the Saturday.

I wonder if that little grandstand is one for families of mechanics or something like that?

I thought Club Silverstone was hospitality because they won't let you in on quali day, we tried but had to go along past that bit. We watched quali this year from Beckets. But that's obviously why we couldn't get in that part, because it's held for ticket holders the whole three days.

Yeah one of the perks in Club Silverstone is that your seat is reserved all weekend. Which is particularly good when you get a quali session like 2012 with torrential rain and an hours stoppage as you don't have to stay in your seats incase someone takes it and go into the warm dry club instead :)

Mmm the warm dry club does sound particularly appealing :) that wet quali I was in international pit straight and we were playing Mexican wave games with the teams opposite :hehe:

For me the best part of the Austin race build up was the Nascar instructor telling Hill and Herbert that after a few laps they would feel like racing car drivers. Herbert was too shocked to speak lol

An interesting article here about the venue ( COTA) and the already existing TMS ( Texas Motor Speedway) . I'm not sure of all the characters, you stateside guys will understand this more. But the TMS guy is upset about COTA, doesn't think it was necessary. The consensus though seems to be that it brings something else to Motorsport , and the fans of each sport will learn to appreciate the other. Next year the two races are schedules a week apart, so fans of one series may very well head over to the other event to get a taste of it.

Its too funny, one guy is complaining that because he has a track, the whole world owes it to him not to build another one or compete within any distance he decides. Sounds like the general attitude that informs the opinion of some parts of America, maybe near the Mason dixon line

"Anybody that you do business with, you deserve loyalty. I look at races as the sanctioning body is a wholesaler and they sale you a product and you turn around and retail it to the public. If you've been the retailer for all this area and all of a sudden they want to bring in another distributor and it's going to cut into your deal, that's not OK, that's not appropriate. If IndyCar wants to run in Austin, my response is God Bless you, it's been a nice 18 years, have fun. We don't need another race in the market to cause people to make choices and decisions."

Next he will be making proclamations that God prefers when you keep things within the same family

... We don't need another race in the market to cause people to make choices and decisions.
...

What's funny is that you don't see the similarity between "one guy's" mentality and Mercedes' rationalization
for vetoing in-season development ((only until July)) next year, for fear that other teams might catch up.
Isn't it ironic?

That's a different thing Sagi. The track owner doesn't like there being a second track . He doesn't likes that there's another track near to his that people may choose to go to.
Mercedes aren't stopping people building engines, and they aren't stopping people choosing an engine from whichever supplier they want, they're just insisting the rules regarding the building of them , which were agree by all for good reason, are maintained.
#424562
Mercedes may not be stopping people from building engines; but, they are stopping other teams from continuing to develop, in order to be competitive. Same thing, as far as I'm concerned, since both "one guy" and Mercedes are effectively stifling competition.
Those rules were agreed upon before there was any real evidence as to the possibility of one team dominating and others not being allowed, under those same rules, to be competitive.

The rules are the letter of the law, the competitiveness inherent in F1 is the spirit of the law.
Unfortunately, you have the letter overshadowing the spirit, in this case.

Best discussed in the engine thread I think.
In this incident the guy in the US is complaining BECAUSE THERE IS ANOTHER TRACK. He doesn't want customers to have a choice as to where they go to race or to watch racing. Mercedes is taking choice away from no one.
