So you think they should chuck Magnus Son in with Perez for 2013?

I hope magnusson does better than his dad did. I had high hopes for dad after the early categories, but he was dismal in F1. Sounds like junior's getting the hang of it a bit better. I still can't get my head around the fact that Magnussen has a son in F 1 :yikes:

ESPN F1: Driving for McLaren in the morning session, Magnussen was the busiest driver as he completed 40 laps with a best time of 1:42.651. He edged out Antonio Felix da Costa by just 0.066s before handing over the McLaren to Gary Paffett for the afternoon session, and said that his running had been "not easy ... but I felt comfortable with the car".

Magnussen and da Costa's Red Bull were over three quarters of a second clear of the rest, as da Costa completed the most laps over the whole day with 79. Paffett set the third quickest time with his last lap having taken over the MP4-27 from Magnussen, ending with a best of 1:43.407.

Looks like McLaren's test drivers are having a good time with the MP4-27

Button's lack of grip with the car is seemingly inexplicable. They've got a nice long winter break, where little is changing regulation wise for next year, so there is time to figure it all out.

Maybe Button needs more testing time than the test drivers....since he seems to still be on a steep learning curve with this car with 2 races left to go in this season. :hehe:

Hot damn, I just realized I'm on the verge of a beautiful post count...better spend the next one in the Lewis (worthwhile) thread. :P

Button need more testing? Nah. Don't you remember the mid season test? Lewis wanted to go but Jenson said it wasn't necessary.

I'm a proud fan of McLaren, its a sport you cant always win. do Liverpool fans just give up on their club?

Liverpool supporters mass outside the ground, block the gates and demand changes, demand new managers

Proud McLaren fans insist that 'THERE IS NOTHING WRONG AT MCLAREN', not every team can win, every team has a bad race (or 2, or 50), this is how things are, you lot are all idiots etc etc

Denial is not a river in Egypt

Martin Whitmarsh says McLaren will continue to use Mercedes engines
Team Principal keen to continue 18 year association

Keen to continue? Sounds like knee pads being strapped on at McLaren

Martin Whitmarsh says McLaren will continue to use Mercedes engines for the foreseeable future -despite becoming a customer team for the first time in over two decades.

Well well! what is happening with McLaren, first we hear the Lewis will stay despite a pay cut (he works for us, no driver tells us how much to pay him), then we hear that they offered the highest amount going in a failed attempt to grovel and keep him

then we hear that McLaren wont be paying for engines, no way! Honda cant wait to jump back into F1 just to be with Button again and to rekindle the past glory years with the team.

Days after highlighting Mercedes' part in their unreliabilty and failure, whitmarsh is now happy to continue with Merc for the foreseeable future at 14 mill per season,

I am sure Merc will make sure the Mac get a really great service as a customer competing with their works team going forward

whitmarsh sure knows how to play hardball!!

What happened to the rumored McLaren in-house engine???

Think that one came about just because they made their own engine for the 12C.

Strictly speaking they didnt make their engine for the road car. It was a specialist company in England that manufactured it in house and they rebadged it. It certainly wasnt specced from scratch for McLaren, it was an existing Nissan V8 that they matched up with an Italian gearbox and white labelled McLaren.

They did customise the engine completely for McLaren but it was delivered as a unit to be dropped into the chassis at MTC.

There was talk before of buying Cosworth or BMWs existing tooling facility but both options deemed too expensive and risky. If there had been appetite for building their own engine the BMW option would have been ideal.

I wouldn't dismiss it in the near future Scotty.

Cook McLaren have hired engine designers specifically for this engine. Unless all the major car magazines have got it wrong, seeing as you have all the facts on everything McLaren, maybe let them know!
By CookinFlat6
#332976
Yes they hired Engine specialists, in fact they contracted a whole firm called Ricardo based in West Sussex to develop this existing engine. Them there are facts. Yes one could argue that the final product was exclusively for McLaren and that apart from the original bore and cylinder arrangement its practically a new engine

But strictly speaking it wasn't built by McLaren because; it wasn't in house and it wasn't built by McLaren employees

Obviously the British press and McLaren are not going to go out of their way to mention thses details in press releases etc, if McLaren had the expertise or the tooling facility they would have started building their own engines long ago. Its way too expensive for a low volume manufacture and positively ruinous for an F1 company

The best bet for the F1 side by far would have been to take over the BMW facility and staff when they quit F1
