McLaren and Ferrari are definitely trying to blow the diffuser it looks like.

But this is what is really interesting me right now, look at this RB diffuser.

I surmise the wind tunnels must be showing that that little wall does not cause any drag or any other aero impediment.

Rear brake ducts look huge! May be using them to capture exhaust gases, to drive through the wheels, to help scavenge the 'coke bottle" area?

More importantly, look at the rear ride height!!!! Reference plane easily 100mm off the deck...

Which is weird since...

Having pioneered the exhaust-blown diffuser, Red Bull's RB7 could run a high rear ride height to improve overall downforce. With the FIA banning such aggressive use of the exhaust gases by regulating where the exhausts exits can be located, Newey admitted that he had been forced to lower the car and that he didn't know how much it would impact its relative performance.

Exactly......

Could the ducts possibly re-direct some of the exhaust gases down along the lateral edges of the floor to try to achieve a similar ( if not as efficient) effect?

Remember the hubs can have a rotating vane inside them, as part of the brake bell, for example......

The problem with supposedly banning something, is that you don't just un-learn/ forget the technology, you just seek another, legal way to implement the same effect.

Hence the FIA has issued a statement that they will take a close look at the cars in Jerez, to evaluate whether teams are trying to exploit the exhaust positioning in view of specifically gaining any aero-dynamic effects, contrary to the intended purpose.Interesting weeks ahead I think. Mercedes must be working overtime in the windtunnel and composites shop making and testing all the little tweaks seen on the other cars!!!!

Just noticed what a neat job Red Bull did of what appears to be pairing the driveshafts, and the rear bottom wishbone leg into a common fairing. Amazing that they appear to pick-up the wishbone half way up the upright. Must be one strong unit to take the bottom wishbone load's that high up. Pull rod rear suspension also allows aero-beneficial slightly smaller top top wishbone profile, as the tensile load is shared between the two members....

It's stupid ofcourse they will try and use the exhaust gas still. The only way the FIA can stop it is to make the exhaust regs even tighter, have them side exiting or even crazily exiting sticking out the rear behind the diffuser

Now we're talking. That's where they belong like on (almost) every other automobile.

Well, from 95 till-late 90's they all fed the exhausts out over the top of the diffuser, as those stepped floor cars were too sensitive to throttle position to run them through the diffusers as previously. The 2000 McLaren was the notable exception, with near-merged pipes in the diffuser, and what a beautiful note that made!!! I can clearly recall it, even now :D

screw it, just ban exhaust altogether. let the engineers figure that one out.

Charlie Whiting: "You see what happens when you guys can't follow the 'spirit of the rules'?"
FOTA: "THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS."

Hm, could work w/o fossil fuel

BBC F1 pit-lane reporter Lee McKenzie
"As you know, Mercedes are the only top team here in Jerez who are running an old 2011 car. The word on the street is that the reason they are not here with a 2012 car is that they are trying to hide a clever new front wing they have developed - they don't want their rivals to see it too early. It seems the word is already out, though."

Well, I'm expecting to see something exciting when they reveal now.
