Wasn't Honda in F1 not too long ago? They certainly make reliable albeit somewhat uninspired cars but their business acumen at least in this sport is questionable.

The problem I think is the engine formula, it is a compromise that does not work. Car Manufacturers tend to go one of 2 ways. Big capacity V engines. Mercedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini, even Porsche (if you flatten the V a bit lol)

Or small capacity maybe with a Turbo straight 4 cylinder, like Renault, Honda etc

(I am not saying these companies do not have engines of the other formula but it is what they are mostly known for)

So to have a small displacement turbo V engine is just too fuzzy.

If Honda are really putting in 100 mill euro just to have their name prominent as title sponsor without recieving any stake in the company at all, then on one hand they have done something even dumber than they did the last time they were in F1.

On the other hand, they no longer have any liability for a team and salaries etc, that really caused them to lose face before when quitting resulting in the £1 sale to Brawn. Now they can pay and get their name out there and still leave whenever they want.

I guess it all depends if they can win with McLaren like Infinity have with RBR. If Honda produce a pup and Mclaren dump them, then it could be another big loss of face

Its a very very good deal for McLaren, expect at least 1 Japanese and 1 Brazilian driver going forward if Hondas old preferences are still there.

If Ron has swapped the ownership of Merc for the hands off investment and engines from Honda then he has cracked it again. And the engine deal will have been a McLaren Group/Automative deal therefore struck with Rons involvement and above the useless input from the previous racing boss who got no sponsors then got sacked

Honda's bread and butter engine is a 1.6L Turbo though, and sitting out a year (With unlimited engine testing and development) whilst looking at what the other three are doing and making sure they don't make the same mistakes might actually put Honda on the upper hand come 2015, or at least equal footing.

Really? Tell that to Renault, after doing everything back at their factory and finally putting it into an F1 car they got a splash of cold water on their face. Honda can run their lump on the dyno for a year but nothings guaranteed till it's in an F1 car.

Yeah, it might sound like an advantage to finish the engine late after watching the others but theres only so much can be seen just by looking on.
Having the data from 8 cars x 20 races to build your 2015 engine is just too big an advantage over starting off when the engine is dropped into the 2015 McLaren
Its an engine format without precedence, and the other 2 manufacturers will be completely savvy to millions of tricks and techniques by then.
Its a very big disadvantage as the other 2 are going to be working on the 2015 variant right through the 2014 season

They probably already have a open wheel chassis (Possibly Indy car or Formula Japan(?)) and will stick the engine in that, whereas Renault were regulated and couldn't. It'll be interesting to see.

Some great races in that list - some I'd prefer not to keep being reminded of, but then having such a great rival for so many years is what made the wins my team got from time to time all the more enjoyable.

F1 journalist Alan Henry lists his Top 10 victories of the McLaren-Mercedes partnership.

Jenson's famous victory at Montreal in 2011 tops the list.

Ridiculous.....number 6,4,3 all deserve to be ahead of 1.

Amen

For me, the most memorable were the 00 Belgian GP with Mikas overtake of his great rival Schumi. Closely followed by Kimis 05 Jspanese Grand Prix win. The 05 was a tad meaningful in that it was on during Australian day time and I was watching with my old man.

Another that had me out of my seat was Fernando's Euro GP win.
Basically any come from behind for the win in the closing laps is most memorable!

Dirty mind DD

McLaren and Ferrari have contributed to great F1 rivalries and memories, but theres a new sheriff in town and packing some serious heat. Now we have moved from the dark arts era and back into mechanical engineering, like Monte has been saying for years, things will become more 'traditional'
