Fact is people are claiming I am saying Vettel is god.
Fact is I am not.
My 4 year old nephew understands that.

You have in depth technical F1 discussions with your 4 year old nephew?

I'd think we'd all welcome your nephew on the forum!

I regret my wording of that, it sounds a bit... TV presenter in the 70s...... (Anyone from the UK will get that reference :hehe: )

Why Vettel’s latest win was both refreshing and frustrating to watch
Respect and admiration for a driver’s achievements does not necessarily mean one has to like it.

Case in point, I respected and admired almost everything Michael Schumacher did in his era of dominance from 2000 through 2004. But, purely as a fan, I couldn’t stand the notion that more than half the time, I went into a race knowing what result was going to happen.

It was going to be a combination of brilliance from Schumacher behind the wheel coupled with strategic calculations played to perfection from Ross Brawn on the pit wall, and of course culminating with the German and Italian national anthems on the podium.

And so, this Monday, we are still firmly entrenched in Sebastian Vettel’s era. A different era, for sure, in terms of how Formula One has evolved since then – but not different in one driver and one team’s ability to extract the maximum performance and results from its machinery.

...

Vettel is an all-time great, to be mentioned in the same breath alongside Schumacher, Fangio, Senna, Prost, etc., no question. You have to give him that.

But he is the face of this new, often unlikeable era of F1, where as the “villain,” his accomplishments perhaps aren’t appreciated in the moment as they will be with time.

That, more than anything, is probably why it’s difficult to like him right now even as he continues his assault on the Formula One record books.

That article says that because Vettel won after dropping one whole place to third, and with "the deck stacked against him" still managed to win, he must be super-talented.

And I just thought he passed a slower car and his team neutralised his team mate.

Although my personal favourite is "The first half of this year, sure, the Red Bull didn’t have the single-lap pace of the Mercedes and relied as much on Vettel’s guile and determination as outright pace to secure wins." Gold.

It does take super talent to win a race in a car with a 2 sec advantage. If you get safety cars your lead would be wiped out and you would have to build another one at 2 seconds per lap.

Vettels guile and outright pace (and the 2 sec car) would be an advantage against Mercs going backwards 8 places because of tyre wear

As we saw even a 2 sec advantage doesnt guarantee wins, as sometimes you make mistakes and end up behind other slower cars, and your guile and race craft mean you crash into them trying to overtake.

In the Red Bull era, since 2011 I've seen Vettel win about 4, perhaps 5 races, the car has won the rest. Difficult to compare someone to the greats with that kind of mechanical advantage as a component.

I think the difference between the Schumacher domination and the current years is that Schumacher's number two driver, had all the tools to beat him. It's clear Webber doesn't have the same tools.

So how many would you say 'the greats' won not because of the car?
Nostalgia is a nice thing, but if you're trying to tell yourself 'the greats' won the majority in off-pace cars, you might want to check the history books again.
