I think Lewis' threat is not if he cooks his tyres trying to take vettel, I think it will come from Webber. Webber stuffed lewis at Oz last year and again he is under pressure to prove a point. I wont dare watch the start, I'll be cowering somewhere :D

Dissapointed to see Webber so far off Vettel :( and you have to say that Massa looks like a rookie out there today. The surprise for me that the Maccas are faster than Ferrari. Also Kobi in the Sauber look pretty handy and Toro Rosso look better aswell. Heidfeld not even making Q2 is not a good impression and Hispania, well.... your a joke!!!

would really love to see Webber win on home soil but Vettel is in a class of his own out there.

Apparently Vettle is using a "START ONLY" Kers system so he gets a small boost into turn one?

perhaps to get better weight distribution because of a smaller battery?

Also wonder if it start only one use, or it can only be used a small ammout per lap compared with other systems.

I would assume he'd get it every lap just the battery isn't actually of a high enough capacity to do the full 7 seconds. Unless they are going extreme on the weigh saving and actually not running the car with a charging mechanism and just pre-charging it before it leaves the garage. So you get the boost of KERS when it really counts off the line but less of the weight and none of the difficulties it adds to the cars feeling under braking. I guess if they have worked out that it makes the car the fastest its ok but not really in the spirit of what KERS is meant to achieve in terms of it being a for energy recovery.

On a side note GOGO Kobayashi!

There's quite a lot I disagree with in this. I don't agree that Massa looked like a rookie. He is only 3 places behind Alonso on the grid, and his mistake was 90% due to a mistake relating to the tyres, which I think most of the field were also struggling with. Silly mistake sure - but then I have the impression many were on the verge of doing something similar. I'm sure that the thread I've just made relating to the seal on the tyres might have played a major part in this.

Funnily enough, I'm not that surprised by Ferrari's performance overall. Athough early in testing they were close to the Red Bull's, it's been common knowledge for quite a while that Renault were quite strong as a package (Heidfeld is a different issue), that McLaren had imroved, and that Mercedes had also come on leaps and bounds. There were always going to be a tightly packed bunch there, and that Ferrari are in the thick of it is not even a slight surprise to me. That's not to say they might not have better race pace - we won't know that until tomorrow.

Heidfeld - time will tell. He's worked these tyres before which is worrying, however that can be balanced with his reduced testing miles in the car. I'd reserve judgment on him until either Sepang or possibly a race after onces he's up to speed with no excused!

I think saying that Hispania are a joke is actually very very very harsh. I'd say the complete opposite - given the circumstances I was VERY impressed by them. Some of you may gasp in astonishment, but given that the quali was essentially a shake down of the car for them, and the first miles they've really covered - to only be 1.5 -3 seconds away from making it into the 107% rule is actually incredibly impressive - I was expecting them to be at least 5 seconds away from the next worst team (Virgin as the case was). Mark my words, by mid season I would not be in the least surprised to see them at least a full second a lap quicker than the Virgin. They must have plenty of time to find after some more practice sessions in the car and more data to work with. Sure they're 10 seconds away from the pole time, but that gap will definitely come down.

Gotta say that Seb's performance was superb as was the whole of the RB team. I don't know if it has fully sunk in to us all just how good his performance today was.

For a driver to essentially be a second faster than every other driver/car in the field, in modern day F1 is staggering - and he didn't use his KERS!

I can fully understand how Mark Webber could only say he was mystified. To be driving the same car and not be able to get much within a second of Seb is staggering. Considering last year they were a tenth apart here, it is hard to see how a driver could get so much better in such a short period of time, in the same car!

A huge congrats to Seb, I think today we saw something very special in terms of qualifying.

As per my FB prediction this morning, Vettel has no chance against Hamilton. Honestly? I think Hamilton is far more aggressive and dominant and he really will just take Vettel on that first corner, As for Webber V JB? I think it will be very interesting, But JB has a huge advantage over the likes of Vettel,Webber & Hamilton due to his smooth driving style. So I think....JB will win, hes dominant on smooth driving, conserving his tyres and stratergy.

Kumi is amazing, well done for his P6! Sauber really are moving forward and I think it's great that they are back on form. Good to see!
IMHO.

Vettel is hardly a push over off the line, he defended pretty hard vs Hamilton a few times in 2010. If I remember correctly Germany was the only time he was beaten off pole. His other failures to convert were due to other reasons, not to mention he was notable able to gain on the start in Monaco and Malaysia. If anyone it was Webber who was poor at getting taken on the opening lap.

The DRS is out of turn 14 if i remember correctly from the commentary. Seb being almost a second faster than anyone else means if he is ahead on the preceeding lap he will pull out enough so that the following car won't even get a chance to use the rear wing to even try and close the gap back up. If he loses the race I find it more likely it will be due to:

a) Some sort of Failure
b) Bad safety car timing
c) Us finding out the the RB7 is remarkably worse for tyre wear
d) RBR doing a Ferrari on strategy

Much props to McLaren on the return to form though. Looks like we will have RBR vs McLaren instead of RBR vs Ferrari.

Ferrari can go fight it out with Merc, Renault and Sauber :D

Vettel deffinatley will not win tomorrow's GP. I know that for a fact...Hmmm? I think it is between Lewis & JB, JB because of his smooth driving style, Or Lewis because he takes no prisoners! Vettel is a puppy still, despite being mighty in Qually. He is on his own, he is different in race. So he will have a tough time tomorrow, not to forget Alonso!

Webber has bad starts, that's what I'm worried about...
On the top, if there is no collision in the first lap, I don't think anyone can stop Seb.

I think it's 75% that Vettel will win tomorrow, everything up to him, of course if his car doesn't give up, which seems to be unlikely after the pre-season testings

He never finnished this race, I think it's a about time that he does. He looked a bit reserved today, he is probably thinking about tomorrow...

Some thoughts on qualifying today.

Sebatian Vettel is damned quick, and he certainly deserved everything RB gave him. Webber, doesn't have a leg to stand on againt his Qualifying pace.

The extra two weeks was a godsend for McLaren and I think they'll be in a serius WCC hunt this year.

Ferrari showed up to Melborne with a reliable pig on their hands. Alonso drove that car on the edge to get what he got. Massa will be jettisoned by Ferrari mid year unless there's a miraculous recovery for him. For anyone saying that he'd be better this year than last, it's nail biting time. You can't compete for a WCC with only one driver in the top 5.

Sauber, Sauber, Sauber! The influx of cash was put to good use, Kobayashi was the picture of consistency and he's clearly taken on the team lead. That boy has a future in F1, he's just downright exciting to watch!

The opposite of above goes for Williams.

Petrov doesn't do it for me, but his drive today was commendable... sorry Hammer, Heidfeld got majorly schooled.

Can we put this whole Schumacher/Rosberg thing to rest now? Please?

Also good job to Buemi and Paul DiResta who beat his team mate (but Force India is an afterthought team this year)

Lotus-Renault is going to be best of the rest again, but nothing more, too much of a gap now to STR, FI and the rest.

Can't hide it. Very upset the Ferrari F150. Alonso drove the wheels off it for 5th place. It's like 08 with Renault all over again.

Such a strong winter testing had everyone fooled. Even Autosport had this article Why Ferrari Won The Testing War which they should probably remove, it's completely wrong.

They better get some upgrades onto the car quick smart or it will be to difficult to fight for the championship this year.
