Dissapointed to see Webber so far off Vettel
and you have to say that Massa looks like a rookie out there today. The surprise for me that the Maccas are faster than Ferrari. Also Kobi in the Sauber look pretty handy and Toro Rosso look better aswell. Heidfeld not even making Q2 is not a good impression and Hispania, well.... your a joke!!!
would really love to see Webber win on home soil but Vettel is in a class of his own out there.
There's quite a lot I disagree with in this. I don't agree that Massa looked like a rookie. He is only 3 places behind Alonso on the grid, and his mistake was 90% due to a mistake relating to the tyres, which I think most of the field were also struggling with. Silly mistake sure - but then I have the impression many were on the verge of doing something similar. I'm sure that the thread I've just made relating to the seal on the tyres might have played a major part in this.
Funnily enough, I'm not that surprised by Ferrari's performance overall. Athough early in testing they were close to the Red Bull's, it's been common knowledge for quite a while that Renault were quite strong as a package (Heidfeld is a different issue), that McLaren had imroved, and that Mercedes had also come on leaps and bounds. There were always going to be a tightly packed bunch there, and that Ferrari are in the thick of it is not even a slight surprise to me. That's not to say they might not have better race pace - we won't know that until tomorrow.
Heidfeld - time will tell. He's worked these tyres before which is worrying, however that can be balanced with his reduced testing miles in the car. I'd reserve judgment on him until either Sepang or possibly a race after onces he's up to speed with no excused!
I think saying that Hispania are a joke is actually very very very harsh. I'd say the complete opposite - given the circumstances I was VERY impressed by them. Some of you may gasp in astonishment, but given that the quali was essentially a shake down of the car for them, and the first miles they've really covered - to only be 1.5 -3 seconds away from making it into the 107% rule is actually incredibly impressive - I was expecting them to be at least 5 seconds away from the next worst team (Virgin as the case was). Mark my words, by mid season I would not be in the least surprised to see them at least a full second a lap quicker than the Virgin. They must have plenty of time to find after some more practice sessions in the car and more data to work with. Sure they're 10 seconds away from the pole time, but that gap will definitely come down.
