Wolff warns against 'foolish' optimism

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has played down his team's favourites status ahead of the first race of the season in Australia this weekend.

Mercedes' strong showing in pre-season testing means they have the shortest odds to win the Australian Grand Prix and are also tipped for title success. But without a single race run, Wolff said there are still plenty of reasons to keep expectations in check.

"You have to keep the expectations low with such a change in regulations because if you head into the weekend foolish with pink glasses on, saying 'This is our year and we are going to destroy everyone else', it would not be the right attitude.

"We have had five or six race simulations [in testing] and we finished two, so I guess of course it is good and satisfying being up at the front in testing, but it doesn't mean we will be up in the front on Sunday. This is why we have to keep the optimism back a little bit at this stage and see how it pans out here and in Malaysia."

Wolff said testing pace was a little bit more transparent than in recent years, but believes a few teams showed decent pace.

"I guess maybe testing this year was a bit more relevant that previous years because you couldn't really play around with the weight. Everybody is fighting hard to get near the weight limit, so nobody was really sandbagging.

"Again, from testing, you would probably say that our strongest competitor appeared to be Williams, but Force India had some strong running, McLaren had some good running in Jerez and Ferrari had some good days also. This is probably the pack, but again, from testing, we don't know."

And Wolff was not willing to write off Red Bull either.

"You can only analyse what we have seen so far and they had a really difficult start in Jerez and they didn't look good. But some of the teams have improved and got some mileage at the end. I have no doubt that the last two weeks they will have tried to optimise everything and eventually they will bounce back.

"Nevertheless, we have an advantage at this stage of the season because we have done more kilometres and we had all the customer teams running and doing lots of miles, and this obviously adds up."

Probably helps confirm that the factory team does have the advantage of looking into everyone else's running sims and using it to their advantage.

Interesting....the sentence you highlighted. They obviously gained a lot from their customer teams as well.

He has to talk down Merc, otherwise he'd look foolish if things didn't go as well as expected....but I bet secretly hes pissing his pants with excitement.

New Nose Cone Postponed

The German publication Auto Motor und Sport has reported that Mercedes’ radical new nose cone has AGAIN failed the mandatory FIA Crash test. However, the Silver Arrows are pressing ahead with a new front wing and engine cover.

A rough translation of the article states:

Mercedes brings a new front wing and a more streamlined engine cowling to Australia. The technical update will bring two tenths per lap. However, the new nose had to stay in the factory. It failed the crash test.

Mercedes is already one step ahead. And have shipped with them, a new front wing and a close-fitting engine cowling were packed. Chief designer Aldo Costa announced: “With the new wing we went an extreme way.” On Thursday, the wing remained well hidden.

Sidepods and tail fairing are more compact than last in Bahrain, where each day of testing new holes were carved into the outer skin. Only the analysis of the cooling problems made the trimming process possible. Experts at the main factory in Sindelfingen brought the Formula 1 engineers on the track. The lines in the water cycle were contaminated. “They knew the problem from the series (of tests) and had to ourselves same the right solution at hand,” says team boss Toto Wolff.

Yes, we saw several rear/cooling configs in Bharain, some obviously give more cooling vs aero. And its likely the 'fastest' one was only used one day.

This could be the bad boy that will be unleashed this weekend

Never has an F1 rear had so much sophistication and technical detailing and unlike RBRs this one actually is functional

Also, horner says merc will finish two laps before everyone, and Button says 1 second quicker. So everyone is crying that merc are gonna win.

Don't know if that's a Brit saying or not, I'm more familiar with the toe in the door comment. Foot under the table is more like, you know, something dirty.

Toe in the door? You mean foot in the door, a toe wouldn't stop a determined door closer.

Dat coverpage.....

Anyway props to Merc for making some good calls on the strategy front. It was tough going in terms of getting the timing right and I was pleased to see they weren't missing Brawn very much today. Let's see how they get on in race conditions.
