Question, would McLaren be as motivated as before in gunning for the WDC this year? Knowing full well that if they succeed, team Mercedes will be sporting No.1 on their car next year.

I think Lewis had the biggest chance (still) to catch and beat Alonso, but he might've just gifted it to Alonso with this move...if Mclaren struggle to win WDCs while being motivated, imagine how crap they'd be not being fully motivated.

I think Lewis had the biggest chance (still) to catch and beat Alonso, but he might've just gifted it to Alonso with this move...if Mclaren struggle to win WDCs while being motivated, imagine how crap they'd be not being fully motivated.

It'll cause questions in the team about focusing on Lewis, rather than getting to know Jenson's driving preferences better, as he'll be the one with the team next year. But even if Lewis leaves, surely McLaren will still get a huge benefit if he wins the WDC, the key is the personal relationships that will be damaged, McLaren might also start to focus on Button as I already mentioned, as whatever happens Lewis is leaving but they need Button happy next year.

I wouldn't advise anyone to leave McLaren if they want to win, but I've got to respect Lewis's decision and really wish him well." Umm...did Kimi and Alonso not leave McLaren and go on to be Champions with other teams? I appreciate McLaren coming good this year (finally) and I appreciate the heritage and what they mean to the sport but I have to say, Whitmarsh is a little too full of himself now. He just lost what many argue as the fastest guy in F1...a lost that falls on his watch and partly his fault...so you would think he would choose the McLaren way of being very starch-like and diplomatic in his retort. Focus on the remaining races and what's on offer for your new driver lineup instead of the backhanded swipe at Lewis. What happens when Lewis wins races in 2013 with a car that may not be as quick as the McLaren and Perez or Button don't, should Lewis walk by the McLaren pit and stick up two fingers? He won't, but...

Hold your horses, Alonso hasn't won this year yet, best not hold the prancing horse.

Fair point, Vaptin. He is doing rather well and is on tap to win this year unless Vettel or Lewis has something to say about it. I suppose the heart of the issue is that Martin insinuates that you won't win if you leave McLaren. Heikki and JPM are the only two to leave McLaren and not win races/do well...but JPM went to NASCAR and Heikki went to a backmarker. Everyone else went on to be successful.

Alonso was dragging the Renault around for two years, but I'll admit it's not as comparable as Hamilton as I think Alonso just wanted a way out, he wasn't too fussed or expectant of success at Renault, but some may argue that was Lewis's motivation to go to Mercedes, he decided he wanted a change, but Mercedes might not produce a faster car than McLaren.

Alonso ought to have won the title in 2010, sure but Ferrari messed up massively, produced an competitive car for their standards in 2011, and the car is lagging behind in 2012 with raw pace, though it remains to be seen if the pace will come back to them once they configure their upgrades and get back to higher speed circuits.

Interestingly, I think Ferrari's and Mcalren's most recent title, came at the same time in 2008, it remains to be seen whether Alonso is better off leaving Mclaren if you ask me. Even Kimi, might have taken the 2007 and 2008 titles with Mclaren.

Looking just at the stat sheet, one could question if Alonso is better off having left McLaren. The fair point may be that he would have won as many races as he has won with Ferrari so far. The difference may be that he's doing his job with no political trappings at Ferrari and he can see where the car is going. Lewis has that opportunity now with AMG. He too can get on with it without the political trappings that is McLaren. A happy and quick Lewis is a winning Lewis.

Lewis is quick, but he still needs the car to perform in, I suppose we will just have to wait and see with Mercedes, and even with Alonso and Ferrari.

I'm sorry but no one person is bigger than the team!!! I know Lewis is fast on his best days, but the s*** that comes with him could well be to much for any team. It will be interesting to see how much of a team player he will be at AMG and whether his attitude can contribute to the team as a whole, or he will just end up throwing his toys out of the pram again and move to another team.

Mclaren should be thankful they still have one of the fastest drivers on the grid who rarely makes mistakes and can work as part of a team. And Perez joining is a very good move.

I ask... does anyone remember the six or so race stint Jenson Button had not too long ago? Apparently everyone, even MW has forgotten about it. Forward to 2013 I guess, but there is still a battle to be had this year. Let's get through that first.

So what if Lewis (by a very long shot according to Button) wins the WDC this year because the McLaren is go strong. McLaren may even still be able to pull out the double and win the WCC... does anyone thing the ensuing love fest will change anything, and it will be like a Disney movie and everyone gets back together and lives happily ever after?
