It's also possible that both Pirelli and Mercedes have been working in conjunction with the FiA, just like Ferrari did, to try and smooth over this laughable tire situation in order to save face for everyone. So it's understandable that they'd want to keep tight lipped about things and be on a need to know basis where possible with everyone else. Then RedBull finds out, Ferrari finds out Mercedes got more than they did, and it all hits the fan and the FiA is trying to smooth things as best they can without coming out and saying what they've been up to behind the scenes.

That's a plausible explanation.

If it is something like that I just hope no one suffers from being made a scapegoat though I doubt we'd ever hear the real story behind it.

Is it possible? Ferrari would alter a 2011 spec car to be like a 20113 spec car for the testing they performed? Fascinating.
ESPNF1It is possible the FIA is investigating whether the Ferrari run at the Pirelli test "conforms substantially with the current Formula One technical regulations" despite being two years old.

I hope we get a ruling before Canada. I'd hate to attend a GP where there's a specter of FiA induced caca hanging overhead.

There's not s snowflakes chance in hell that there will be any decision before Canada. So we have a topic to unleash our imaginations on for a good while yet.

What's going on now is the FiA is in a "consideration" process. Specifically they are considering whether to refer this matter to the International Tribunal (IT). If it does refer it to the IT then we are in for a process that will take about a month before it can actually convene to hear and then deliberate. The IT has specific time frames to advise the parties being investigated and then time frames for them to reply before it can convene (they can speed that process up but it's fairly lightly that it will still take a while).

It is possible the FIA are about to exclude Ferrari from the WCC, its possible they are about to release a statement declaring love for Ferrari.

That article offers no evidence or reasoning, it just says "is is possible".

Also, I think this new inquiry, is in relation not to the breach of the sporting code, but is for the teams to provide information in relation to what Perelli have told the FIA, I think this one is regarding Perelli's contract with the FIA.

I really think Ferrari is being asked questions as a reference point to what Mercedes and Pirelli are saying about what happened in their test. The Ferrari test was run with the F150th Ferrari and was also run at Barcelona. There are independent pictures from that test (see below). The 150 is nothing like the F138, you can see it is the 150 down to the push rod suspension. Nothing F138 about that car.

The quieter things get from the parties the more I think this is looking bad for Mercedes and possibly Pirelli as well.

This document shows the lengths that Pirelli went to to make sure all the teams were happy and lotus gained no advantage when the testing was with heir car. Not sure they did all that stuff with the Ferrari and Mercedes test.

I think Pirelli are in trouble. But maybe the FIA want to get rid of them now that the tyres are so bad and getting such bad press.

EDIT: that might be old news now. I can't keep up with this latest saga.

Just before this test saga started, Pirelli were all like "We might quit next year, so treat us right mofos"....and now their negotiation powers have bottomed out to zero. The FIA have a very strong case to just kick these incompetent clowns out and bring back some real tyre makers....wish Michelin will make a come back. They easily beat Bridgestone during the tyre wars, and proved to be the best out there, USA debacle or not.

For my daily driver I use Continentals, for my mistress I use Dunlops, with an eye towards BF Goodrich as the next set if they make an appropriately sized tire for the front of an old Porsche.

Clearly what tire F1 rolls on is of little influence in my choices. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that.

Definitely not...I was a big Pirelli fan way before Pirelli entered F1 since all the flashy cars in my country seemed to be rolling on them. But costs always play a part and I stuck with Falkens. But you could say F1 has helped me choose which tyres to 'stay away' from now. Even if there's no logic to it. The same way I wouldn't shell out any cash to buy a Ferrari jacket. :P

To suggest there is any correlation between the performance of their road tyres and that of their F1 tyres is quite ludicrous.

People seem to forget that the FiA asked Pirelli to build fragile tyres which Pirelli themselves have never seemed too happy about.

Nobody here comes close to thinking there is a correlation in the tyre makers products, but thanks for the input.

I wouldn't buy pirelli's now on principal even though the road tyres are different to F1 tyres. Thanks but no thanks Pirelli. You've screwed my sport up. And if the FIA told you to...well where are your principals?

Lets not forget a normal road tire would last 5 corners on an F1 car. So even fragile F1 tyres that do a dozen laps will still outlast road tyres by about 40 times.

I know that this has been discussed before but F1 sponsorship does not affect my life. I drive a bmw, (no F1 presence) I have a Samsung phone on the Orange (EE) Network (no F1 presence) I drink Ale (No F1 presence) I don't drink energy drinks (well at most about 3 cans a year)

and due to male pattern baldness, you don't use dandruff products.

I have had Blackberries, I've used Shell gasoline, I've routinely shipped things using UPS and my cell phones are on AT&T. I guess people either are affected by sponsorship or they're not. I know most on this site know the difference between the two flavors of Pirelli.

Maybe if they used 18 inch rims like they do on most other high end motorsports, we'd get more direct benefit from the research put into tire development in street cars, but F1 using 13 inch rims is kind of the way NASCAR used carburetors until recently. Some of the logic simply does not make sense.

13 inch rims, contributes to less weight, less momentum from inertia. Small rims make more sense for racing...large rims are for the style, and the little extra benefit of feel for the road although it makes not much difference overall.

Do they use 13 in rims in WEC, NASCAR, GRAND-AM/Le Mans, WRC? I can't think of one. Why is that? If it was a benefit, you know they'd be using it. You're wrong on this one.

Bigger wheels allow for bigger brakes, better ventilation, smoother ride. I'm not talking stupid 22" rims, I'm talking 18 inch which is what most higher performance road cars come with today. The weight difference in F1 would be minimal tradeoff given all of the other benefits and is even somewhat offset by smaller tire sidewalls. If F1 is beating the road relevance drum so loudly with the V6 turbo engines, then it doesn't make sense to use a rim size that was common on road cars from the 70's.
