McLaren raised a few eyebrows by opting for the Dane, but sporting director Sam Michael says his arrival has created a buzz at Woking.
"Kevin's arrival is really exciting for the whole team - he represents the future," he said. "When you have a rookie come onboard - somebody who's full of energy, who's just won his lower-category Championship, and who is desperate to prove himself - it creates a buzz within the team; people share his hopes and dreams. From a team point of view, it's a fantastic move."
So there is a new buzz about the team, with the staff galvanised by his hope and dreams. Were they not galvanised, directed and led by their team leader in 2013?
Will this new energy divide efforts next season? Can the the team be focused on the bright rookie and still treat Button like the number 1 driver like they did this season.
Which drivers style and preferences for the new car will direct the evolution and introduction of new parts?
Are they going to allow Mag time to learn from Button or are they going to expect him to challenge from day 1. If so surely he will need more help from the team, maybe the more experienced race engineer as well as Buttons data. Will he get extra help with strategy or will he get the B strategies or will he be left alone with his race engineer to compete with the other side of the garage like Sergio was?
What if Button is more consistent but scoring low points and Mag is less consistent but shows more potential for high points over time? Will they want the consistent mediocrity or will they encourage Mag like they did with Sergio?
Will Button cry on the radio if challenged aggressively by Mag?
Questions that need to be addressed beneath all the PR talk.
If Mag can settle in quickly and start producing the team need to be clear about Buttons role and not allow any of the usual disturbing stuff that wrecks the kids confidence or career like they did with Sergio
Anyone have any idea of how they think McLaren will play this?
