Dont think Button would have finished on the podium or ahead of Alonso, so I dont think his retirement hurt Lewis much in the title race

I don't agree, I think that JB had more than enough pace to hold off Alonso and Perez, before his retirement, Jenson was up there with Lewis on lap times, being stuck behind Massa was what cost him the most. Lewis definitely had the upper hand against Jenson, but JB was close enough to finish second to Lewis in my opinion!

I agree. I honestly think it would of been a McLaren 1-2 if it wasn't for the mech failure....

Agreed, or at the very least two McLarens on the podium. 3 consecutive wins (something that no team has done since the Red Bull domination of last year) and yet McLaren have just 83 WCC points to show for it.

Winning Hungary and Monza shows the car is tip top. Alonso said last week he was 'concerned' with the Mclaren... its true. They are up there. Alonso would have definitely challenged... but Monza was a "good track" for the Ferrari... so I guess in general, Mclaren is a better car.

So Lewis was just lucky Jenson retired and Alonso had the mech issue :)

To an extent but all wins require an element of luck. Having the main competitors either retiring or being hindered in qualifying was fortunate but he seemed to have the best car on the day. If Alonso qualified 2nd I thkn the best he'd have finished would have been 2nd.

Very well done Lewis. Easy win as the field crumbled. :D
Whitmarsh made himself look like a clown on the BBC highlight programme by only wanting to talk about how unlucky Button was, rather then giving Lewis any credit. Sickening tbh.

Anyway, Lewis now 2nd going into Singapore. A season highlight for me.

Martin Whitmarsh, team principal
"Lewis drove a perfect race here at Monza today, and duly took a well-deserved victory - his 20th grand prix win and McLaren's 180th.

"In truth, he was in total control throughout all 53 laps, and was never really threatened.

"We should have scored a one-two finish, but Jenson was deprived of an easy second place by a fuel system problem. That's frustrating for him and frustrating for us, but the important thing is that our car is a winner. We've now won three grands prix in a row, and both our drivers are on top form.

"Lewis has now closed up to second place in the drivers' world championship, with seven grands prix still to run. It was his third victory of the season, and Vodafone McLaren Mercedes' fifth. The momentum is with us, and the drivers' world championship crown is well within Lewis's grasp. In the constructors' championship, too, we're in good shape.

"Winning is what Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is all about. In Singapore in two weeks' time, we're planning to do some more of it."

Martin seems to have his eye on the ball, maybe its time to tell Button to quit dreaming and not get in Lewis' way in anytime in the future.

Agreed agreed agreed. Great drive by Lewis Hamilton today, but Button would most CERTAINLY have made it a 1-2, he was marching on rapidly as soon as he'd cleared Massa. Another 1 car finish for McLaren!! :banghead::banghead:

Hammer, watch the BBC1 highlights and the Whitmarch interviw after the race. Not once did he congratulate Lewis -

Quote from interview -

Jake - "This is becoming a bit of a habit of the last couple of races, only getting one car to the finish. At least that car getting tot he finish is winning the Grand Prix for you."

Whitmarsh - "Yeh, not a perfect day, but on balance we've managed to celebrate for the last two races and I think we'll celebrate agin tonight, but for Jenson I think tough because it should have been a one, two. He knows that. He did a fantastic job yesterday, you know he's being doing it alright and he's on form and he wanted those points, we wanted them as well, for him and for us. That's disappointing. We think there was a failure somewhere in the fuel tank. They're very complicated systems for capturing that fuel, so we'll look at that, but meanwhile for the next few hours we will enjoy the moment of winning the Itailian Grand Prix.

Then Eddie asked Whitmarsh about Lewis leaving McLaren and Jake mentioned about how this result shows Lewis what he can achieve at McLaren........still no words of congratulation for Lewis winning the race.

Coulthard - "You mentioned a hug for Lewis, what conversation will you have for JB, obviously a disappointing result for him."

Whitmarsh - "I'll have a hug for JB as well. You know, congratulate him on a great effort all weekend, I'll say sorry to him for the team letting him down. But, you know JB, he'll move on, he knows we're pushing hard and it's frustating, but he's one of the more mature drivers in the paddock and he'll be there saying right, I'm going to try and beat Lewis in Singapore. I think he's got to come away feeling good about the weekend, frustrating that he didn't get the points, but he's got form. People were questioning that a race or two ago and thats a long way behind now, so he really has to go out there and score as many points as he can."

Jake - "And is it getting to the point where you need to have a word with Jenson about playing for the team with Lewis 37 points off the championship lead with 175 left to fight for."

Whitmarsh - "Well I think at the moment the dynamics are right within the team. They're racing each other. We enjoy that, I think the people watching enjoy that, so it will be sometime before we change our mind on that one.

Still no word of congratulation to Lewis on winning the Grand Prix.

Shocking tbh.

Celebrate, enjoy winning the race, plus it was a leading question, asking about the one car finish.

"Lewis drove a perfect race here at Monza today, and duly took a well-deserved victory" is just one quote i found very easily, and something surely everyone agrees with. Hope that chip on your shoulder isn't weighing you down too much... :whip:
