What the heck was he doing on inters the whole way in q3? Was it another great brainwave or Mclaren didn't have enough full wets?

Jenson decided to gamble on inters although it was clearly raining more. Apparently it was an inspired gamble and worth the risk because he out of all the serious contenders spotted an opportunity to qualify high up while the others floundered on wrong tyres

Apparently if he had picked wets he would have gained a couple extra places but he didn't mention if that would have been ahead of his rookie teammate, who had been half a second quicker up to then

I wonder what Ron thinks about the long shot gamble instead of just giving it his best on track and trying on qualify in 7th ahead of his rookie teammate. I suspect Ron likes the route A drivers - competitive on an equal playng field with the others instead of the plan B - do the off track gamble on tyres and hope it catches out the others with more to lose

I'm surprised that JB decided to stick with the Inters; clearly it was the wrong tyre to go with. Watching the SKY TV broadcasts, it looks like there is a much lesser difference between the wet and inter tyres, so there isn't such an advantage to using Inters compared to wets. I would have thought that Jenson would have been aware of this fact, maybe the old man is losing his touch!

All he wants is I beat his teammate, he couldn't match him on pace on same tyres and so he did what he always did against Lewis - straight in the pit for a tyre gamble.

Thing is I am not sure Ron will appreciate Button gambling finishing behind the 'next McLaren WDC' vs dropping team points. Things have changed at the team and winning is the priority not salving ego or celebrating starting 14th and finishing 4th.

The start of the race will be interesting, Button tends to jump out of the way at the start dropping places then getting stuck behind slower cars till later when the cruise and collect kicks in. What will he do if his rookie teammate gains places at the start? There are already signs Button is unsettled by 'the next McLaren WDC' (Ron's words btw)

Absolutely. He thinks we've never seen him in the dry. He resets after every race, same excuses, same tactics, and expects people to not recognise the pattern. I like Jenson, but whatever spark was fuelling him 5 yrs ago has gone. I imagine he's frustrated at not being able to channel that. I can't remember the last time he had a solid weekend where a poor result either in quali or the race wasn't the preamble to a litany of excuses.

He said that he felt he would be around 8th or 9th if he had wets, so why not take the gable with Inters. I agree, but half way through Q3 when he pitted and KMAG changed to full wets he should have done the same, clearly it wasn't going to work.

I don't think that JB is unique in blaming this, that and the other for his poor performances, nearly every race driver I have seen blames something beyond their control for why they finished below expectation!

A very realistic and accurate assessment MOA. The team put him out on inters and, probably more importantly left him out on inters. It was a great opportunity for some decisive leadership from the pit wall to haul him in and put the wets on his car.

Story of his last 5 years indeed

No he asked for inters. He went in and changed to inters. You heard it on the radio. He also confirmed in the post quali interview that it his was his choice. 'I thought it was worth a punt as i would only have been about eigth anyway' . But when the tyre clearly wasn't the one to be on, why wasn't he screaming on the radio ( like Raikonen) that he was on the wrong tyres?

If your only ambition is to beat your teammate, then doing the opposite to what he does can pay off randomly and make you look clever, especially when the team are all trying to help you beat your teammate.

However sometimes it can make you look a real twat if the team are also equally helping the other side of the garage. I am not sure Jensons games will be kindly looked upon by Ron if it starts to interfere with or hamper the 'next McLaren WDC'

I think we will see Jenson play a supporting role soon when strategies are split etc

Jenson's choice, he was trying something different in the knowledge he wasn't likely higher to be 7th or 8th...

I guess that was part of my point. It was a time for a strong leader to step in and specify wets for both cars.
