I am sure Mercedes are not going to purge all the information from the test so they are going to have some data.

What I do not get is that if it was all legal and above board why not let everyone know before hand it was happening.

I think the letter says the statement says they did let everyone know. You're saying that the right thing to do was to let the teams know after Barcelona that a test was being conducted and they should be invited to stick around and watch. maybe... but did they invite other teams to stick around and watch the test they did with Ferrari? You should also be asking that question.

To quote Pirelli again:

Already in March 2012, Pirelli sent an email to all the teams, FIA and FOM, inviting the teams to indicate their availability for testing for the development of tyres for 2013.

So obviously no-one came back saying they were available that week.

I find it unlikely that the only team who would want to take part in some mid-season testing would be Merc...

McLaren needs it more...
If they knew the tyres would be this crucial they would all have come.

Want to, and can afford to are two different things. Plus I think its already been established that Ferrari did some earlier in the year, so they aren't the only team.

McLaren is busy getting Checo and Jenson to be nice to one another.

It's a party by invitation only. It's like Pirelli wanted to rent someone's home for a day...and they picked the owner who is both rich and cool. They probably think of McLaren as rich kids who aren't cool. It's just a social thing, which the other teams have to learn to accept. Redbull and Ferrari are probably just insulted they weren't invited...although in terms of performance Mercedes didn't really benefit, they just got some cash for renting out their cars/drivers.

Then why Redbull made such a big deal about it?
McLaren and Williams who desperately try to understand their cars, would love a mid-season test, and they could afford it too

This we will probably never know......

Maybe the people that were disturbed didn't read the requests Pirelli sent. I don't blame them for being upset. Haven't we all missed out on a party because we forgot the date or misplaced the invite? :)

Exactly... just the same way we'll never know what tricks RedBull used to make their front wings flap, even though they could easily pass scrutineering. It's just the nature of the sport.

Bit more here about 'secret' tests by Ferrari and Mercedes. Whilst Ferrari did use an older car, they didn't inform other teams of the test. So if the issue is one of informing other teams, then Ferrari also fall foul.

But the earlier FIA statement, said the new test was only for the other teams etc. I've never seen a indication for an old car, you needed to inform other teams.
