I hope bloody Virgin isn't really that bad...otherwise the frontrunners have more than just degrading tyres to worry about.

Just heard Perez might have actually skipped the chicane at the end of the lap to set that quick time, ah well... :hehe:

They seemed to have a lot of reliability problems today and couldn't get many laps in...

Might have been testing Bernie's "shortcut" plan

Heh, let's just hope Bernie wasn't taking note of that today, we don't want him to have any reason to press on with it....

So, Webber's quali simulation was still 4 tenths quicker than Button's, despite being done earlier in the day.

Red Bull is still the quickest, I hope! :)
Anyway, Ferrari tries to "imitate" their exhaust system...
On the results:
Glad to see Perez timing fine, Sauber is a great team, and I would like to see some podiums from Kobayashi! :)

Now i saw Sauber did 90 laps! Great!

11:26 Hamilton has done 30 laps this morning, one of the lower tallies of the session with most in the 40s and Buemi on 59, and his best time (set on very heavy fuel in that race sim, remember) is a 1m30.959s, 9s off Vettel's qualifying-simulation pace.

11:25 He's been back in the pits for the last 15 minutes while the team works on the problem, which happened early in a race simulation.

11:25 Bad news for McLaren fans, Hamilton has another problem. This time it's an exhaust failure.

0949: Blimey. Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel has just posted lap of one minute 21.865 seconds. I make that the quickest time in 2011 pre-season testing. He follows it up with a 1:22.397 - the quickest time we've seen in Barcelona this week or in February's third test event at the same circuit. A 1:23.386 on his third lap suggests the German has not been running with too light a fuel load either. Wow. Ominous signs for the rest of the field. Red Bull look lightning quick.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsp ... 419429.stm,
:yikes:
Pre-season wisdom to me looks like there is a clear front two, of redbull and Ferrari, then something of a gap between the next teams, who I think might be tight and a large number, Mercedes, McLaren, Renault, maybe even the likes of Williams, Sauber and Torro-rosso all in check there.

Also starting to think the redbull have an out and out advantage, fastest car, and looking reliable as well.

Ferrari's updated exhaust position:

Same as Red Bull now then by my reckoning.

Sauber sidepod upgrade:

Not seen anything like this on any other new-generation car yet. Reminiscent of the old sidepod 'chimneys'.

Williams seem to be constantly struggling with KERS reliability. I hope they press on and get their flywheel system in the car at some point...

Finally, an excellent comparison here. Wondering why McLaren are slow? Just look at how fat the car is compared to the Red Bull!

Being a "true" fan and totally giving up on Mclaren already, if this year turns into a slugfest between eyebrows and finger i dont think i could live with it.

Decided to root for Sauber this year, if Mclaren sort their house out ill kindly return loyalty. But your cars are getting worse and worse, and your upgrades dont work!

Yup. The Macca is the longest by a decent margin it seems, this might be a repost but whatever:

Of course a longer wheelbase means the car is a bit heaver, but that can be counteracted in other ways (especially with the weight limit going up). Red Bull made their car longer so they could package everything better in the middle and it seems to be working for them...

being fat is the trade off they decided to make with the U sidepods. Not working well so far.

Nope. Honestly, i can't see how they can get this to work effectively enough to make up all that time, unless they can make that gap going over the sidepods much, MUCH bigger, and i just can't see how they can do that and still fit everything in properly (namely engine and fuel tanks). Admittedly i don't know the regs inside out so there might be some leeway, but i'd assume they've pushed the limits already. :scratchchin:

Still, at least they're not in Mercedes' shoes...

Yes,
As well as a slightly updated front wing, the biggest change to the Ferrari is introducing the same exhaust idea as Red Bull have. Ferrari started the testing season with 2010-style exhausts which exited either side of the gearbox. But Red Bull have designed the whole of their car to achieve clear air flow off the top of the diffuser and this meant enclosing the exhausts in a flat, square sleeve that runs along the top of the floor and exits just under the rear wing. Ferrari's design is very similar, but they are introducing it at the final test rather than the first one. There will be a lot of work to do with it in terms of checking whether it's cooking the back of the car."
What you mean nope, they admitted this trade off.
