Agreed. We might as well keep this all in one thread

Sebastian Vettel says his decision to qualify on hard tyres at the Malaysian Grand Prix was not part of a wider strategy but due to his struggle on the medium compound.

Vettel will start the race from fifth on the grid and under the regulations will have to start the race on the hard compound that he set his time on while the others in the top ten used the mediums. But Vettel denied that he was thinking about race strategy when he opted for the hard tyres, admitting he was struggling for performance on the mediums.

"There's not much strategy behind it to be honest," he said. "I was struggling with the soft[er] tyres and thought I had a better car on the hard tyres, which is why I made the call. We could have gone maybe a tenth or two quicker on the soft tyre but then we went significantly faster on the hard tyre. Whether that is an advantage tomorrow ... we are the only ones [in the top ten on hard tyres] so we hope it might be, but we'll see."

Red Bull was off the pace of McLaren for the second qualifying session in a row, but Vettel said that he expects his race pace to be much closer to Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

"We had not so good qualifying in Australia and not so good qualifying here, but we had a good race in Australia so we are hoping we can do a bit more there. Our race pace should be better, but nevertheless there is plenty of work to do. We are aware of that and we need to push harder."

Well... I'm just going to start munching on some humble pie. Sorry LRW.

Hi,

We have in Finland this weird form of betting where you have to guess the time difference to the race winner from seven different drivers, the drivers being Vettel,Webber,Alonso,Hamilton,Button,Raikkonen and Rosberg. Time differences range from Winner-4,9999sek, to up to 1min in 5sec intervals and 1lap, 2lap, DNF after that. Any hints or tips how to approach this kind of betting in general or specifically in Malaysia? No bookers seem to give any helping odds for anything other than winner and time difference between 1.-2. I know it's really hard to win in this but the value would be huge if one found a way to estimate how the race will run.

Thanks for any tips (and mods feel free to move if there's a better place for this),

Sky Bet and I think bet365 both have that same betting here in the UK. It's a tough one to bet on because it's so widely open. Expect the McLarens to be close up front, but as for the rest, who knows?

People like to bet on absolutely anything! I'm surprised there's no section for betting on Vettel's new helmet design or how many times Kimi will make a funny comment, lol. :)

Usually in Malaysia it rains at similar times of day every day right? So, what time is rain expected and what time is the race (local)?

Interesting race prospects regardless of the weather... if it's dry Vettel looks handy on the right tyres from the start.

Malaysia still seems to be in its own world with weather. Like weather forms over the circuit from absolutely nowhere, or it appears more conventionally by being blown in and over the circuit. Whatever the case, it will surely mix things up if the rain arrives! :)

I think Vettel is one to look out for in the race but remember, he didn't choose those tyres from a strategy point of view. He preferred the Prime tyres over the Options so he used them to get higher up the grid; the strategy aspect of it is just a bonus.

Race is at 4pm local time...normally rains at noon time here. But still difficult to predict. I'd say 70% chance of a wet track tomorrow?

People are saying that Vettel will benefit massively due to his tyre choice but are totally forgetting the fact that he will need to pass Schumacher and Webber. He might pass Webber but I doubt passing Schumacher with the speed the Merc has will be possible.

Good qualifying. Little worried that the McLaren's will easily win tbh. Really hope Vettel's tyres give him a better strategy. Well done Schumey for getting third... I can see him jumping to first at the start. Doubt the Mercs have the overall speed to beat the McLarens or Red Bull. We shall see though! Webber and Kimi had the exact same qualifying time too which shows how fast that Lotus is. Don't rule out a podium for either Kimi or Grosjean.

But wow at the Ferrari! Shocking again. Another points finish is all they can hope for really.

And well done HRT :D
