I reckon Bernie knows only too well that this is a silly idea. He's using it to distract people from something else, his divorce perhaps?

Maybe some good news, it looks like the medals idea might not be approved by the FIA afterall.

http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/headlines/n ... 3019.shtml

Here is that article from the Times mentioned in that F1-Live link:

Bernie Ecclestone's radical plan to replace the points system by which the Formula One drivers' championship is scored, with gold, silver and bronze medals for the podium places, is likely to be rejected by the FIA, which must approve the new system to bring it into being.

The Formula One rights holder re-stated his determination to introduce a medal-based championship during a press conference in London yesterday. Ecclestone believes that a medal regime would encourage drivers to overtake and he repeated his resolve to have the new system up and running in time for the first race of next season, in Melbourne at the end of March. “It's going to happen,” he said.

But influential voices in the sport have criticised the scheme. Eddie Jordan, the former team owner, called it “a nonsense” and Damon Hill, the former world champion, said he was “baffled” by a proposal that could mean the championship is decided by the halfway point. Under Ecclestone's plan, Felipe Massa would have been crowned world champion this year rather than Lewis Hamilton.

Ecclestone will need FIA endorsement of his idea at its World Motor Sport Council meeting in Monaco next month, but he is not expected to get it. The world governing body is far from convinced that the teams are in favour of the change as Ecclestone has claimed.

Even if Ecclestone managed to get his proposal through, it would not be implemented until the beginning of the 2010 season at the earliest.

Not sure if this was discussed. Bernie wants driver to go for it. Well don't restrict them. An engine has to last 2 races and a gear box 4 (i believe next season) of course a driver is going to conserve his equipment with rules as they are.
Bernie wants to see them race well let the drivers have a fresh engine for every race this way no one has to conserve their equpment and coast to the end. He want it more competitive, don't keep changing the rules. Because the rich team can adjust quicker than the poor ones. Keep the things the same for a long time and the poor team will get there.

I agree. i mean look at this season just gone, it was fantastic, we had multiple winners, the field was split by less than 2 seconds, we had a championship decided at the LAST CORNER!!! and still Ecclestone isn't happy. Sorry but he just needs to piss off and stop messing with our sport.

From F1 Live:

Formula one teams will discuss Bernie Ecclestone's 'medals' scoring system for the first time this week, according to BMW Sauber chief Mario Theissen.

The German said Ecclestone, who insists the new system will be in place for 2009 having achieved the support of the teams, had been premature in his declarations.

"(This week) will be the first time this topic has been discussed by the teams at all," he told reporters at BMW's end of season party in Munich, referring to the forthcoming meeting of the Formula One Teams' Association.

Theissen said there is a chance the proposal will be supported, but indicated there are arguments 'for and against' its merits.

More likely to gain the support of teams is a shake-up for the qualifying system, including a possible point for pole position.

I sometimes wounder if the F1 PR people come up with completely silly ideas like this to keep the interest of the fans in the off season

The teams would be foolish to accept such a ridiculous thing as a 'medal system'. Encouraging the drivers to go all-out and challenge each other like crazy every time will simply result in more crashes and engine failures, driving costs up. Furthermore the smaller teams will be no use except for making numbers up - as it stands, a driver in a slower car could conceivably win the championship by getting consistent points finishes if his faster opponents repeatedly failed to finish. With the medal system, the chance for a smaller team to come forward and make a statement or a dent in the world championship is eradicated.

I hope the idea is thrown out, and Bernie with it.

To be honest, watching Formula One is enough to turn anybody into a Marxist, with notions of ideological state apparatus and licenced dissent etc. :hehe:

Woah! Where did THIS come from??? :yikes:
I don't see much of exploitation of the workers in F1 - they are remunerated quite handily...

There is much more to Marxism than just Communism. Marx's political theory is based on a lot and expresses many philosophical positions. His work was influenced heavily by the dialectical theories of Hegel. Marx's work has been taken on my many scholars since, particularly in History, Philosophy and Literature. For example, the theory that people are influenced by their conditions of existence (Materialism) traces its routes back to Marx. So, very broadly speaking, you have Marxist economic theories and Marxist philosophical theories. Both are not mutually exclusive; so it is possible to agree with one and not the other. I don't agree with the vast majority of Marx's economics but I feel many of his philosophical theories have a lot of mileage in them. One of those theories is about ideological state apparatuses, propounded by the Marxist philosopher Althusser.
