The W05 is really looking like the most sophisticated so far for sure, Doing so with the best looking nose at that!

...Which school of thought will work best, who know yet, but it's clear that both Ferrari and Merc are in one camp, and every other team is in an entirely different school of thought.

Taking that into consideration and factoring in the problems Renault seems to be having, with their engines,
does this mean that Ferrari and Mercedes will end up in a two-horse race for both titles?

Apparently Renault actually could have a design flaw. The crankshafts are not up to the task and are causing vibrational disharmony (bit of Rons speak there). This could be the particular batch of crankshafts themselves are faulty or that someone on the Renault design team made a serious and fundamentally miscalculation.

depending on which customer car and how its packaged, even a slight unwanted vibration would soon cause terminal failures in all sorts of things, from nuts and bolts to whole parts shaking off.

That would explain why only a few Renault engined cars have ventured out and at low speeds.

i could be wrong with my interpretation so if anyone heard or figured something else would be good to hear. either way there is obviously something up now we are in the second day of testing

I would think that the engines would have had hundreds of dyno hours testing to ferret out things like that months ago. If that's the case, perhaps it's more indicative of a bad batch rather than a design flaw.

Yeah apparently it's a dodgy manufacturing batch of Crank shafts rather than a fundamental flaw.

"German press reporting that Red Bull will not run again today. Unconfirmed, but James is at Red Bull now trying to find out more details on their day"

"No more Red Bull running today due to Renault energy store issue"

Bad times for RB. :(:(

To induce the coanda effect, you needed large volumes of air to then get sucked in by the exaust gasses. Now that's gone, the idea is to get as much air to the rear wing to create that downforce. The Merc seems to be the absolutely cleanest car in back. They've done the best job at keeping obstructions to a minimum. Even the F14T has a big behind when compared to the W05. McLaren by comparison have a ton of things going on in the back to try and manipulate the air flow.

Which school of thought will work best, who knows yet, but it's clear that both Ferrari and Merc are in one camp, and every other team is in an entirely different school of thought.

I may be misunderstanding you, but coanda doesn't rely on volumes of anything and certainly doesn't rely on suction. Coanda happens at low flow rates and with tiny volumes. Best example I can cite to explain what I mean is, when you pour water out of a jug with a pouring spout, and the water, instead of flowing out of the spout, stays attached to the jug and flows back and sometimes even up the underside of the spout lip and then down the edge of the jug - that is coanda.

In F1, teams try to maximize this by reducing extreme curves and providing enough length for the flow to stay "attached" to the surface you are attempting to channel the flow along.

Lots of possible problems being cited for Renault engines. Crankshafts, ERS, turbo .... who knows. But smoke also coming from Seb's car in their garage earlier.

Did Seb know something while doing donuts last year, reminding the guys to enjoy the feeling because you never know how long it's going to last?

Nico first to emerge out again after the red, BOOM! 2 seconds faster, leading the timesheets now. 41 laps and counting.

Edit, improves again by almost half a second. Loving it! :D

Horner made a point of mentioning Renaults smaller budget for the engine. There wasnt the side by side design integration between chassis and engine of the other 2. RBR would not carry any advantage over from the previous era, and it would have depended entirely on Newey once again outsmarting everyone else on an area he has much less understanding and control - engine packaging

The chances were always much much larger that RBR would be 'non special' than 'special'

looking back its laughable to think they could bridge 2 completely different eras retaining the same performance advantage when they are not even a manufacturer

I know hindsight is a great thing but some of us were adamant about this. even once RBR are fully operational, there wont be any 2 sec car, so Sebs finger could be inactive for a good few races.

he knew this, Horner knew this, some of us suspected this
