Red Bull still strongest - Alonso

Alonso won by over 10 seconds in Shanghai after a consummate performance which saw him outpace the Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel decided not to set a qualifying time in order to pursue an alternative strategy, but after starting ninth could only manage fourth at the finish.

Asked if his victory in China was proof Ferrari has the edge over a race distance, Alonso said: "I don't think so. We still don't have the advantage on the car that people try to see after just one victory.

"In Australia we were clearly not the quickest, in Malaysia we were struggling a little bit, especially in qualifying which was the only dry running we saw and we were not so good.. In the race Felipe was fifth so it was not as if he was dominant in the race. [Alonso retired from the race with a broken front wing].

"In China, looking at the race pace, I think Sebastian was the quickest all through the race if you look at the stints, but they chose a very strange strategy and maybe they compromised a little bit the race. I think we need to keep improving and we need to be a little bit faster.

"There are some new pieces coming for this race and also some new components coming for Barcelona and Monaco so hopefully in the next month to month and half we can be at the level of the best cars."

There's more than an element of truth in what you are both saying. But, I think to be at the very top in his profession it's normal to have a very big ego. I find ego more palatable than, say, what we saw from Seb in Malaysia.

Or what we see from Alonso when his teammate is faster?

Every week Ferrari looks more and more like the team that will end Vettel and Red Bull's run, it's still very early but this yeas is looking a hell of a lot more like 2010 than 2011 for Red Bull.

Yeah,

Ferrari are looking like a champion team this year, both drivers pulling well, the team just seems aligned finally, they've had their positive moments, but it all seems to be working at the moment, I mean, their pit-stops are smooth, their strategy is good, the drivers and team have a great deal of mutual respect, I mean, there is never any of the radio fustration or antics we get from other teams with Ferrari (for the past year or so even).

I mean, when Massa is good, you know they got a good car.

Just have to see if it lasts.

I think the car is fundamentally good so you can pretty much bank on us being at the point end at most races this year

Yes, Ferrari have started really strongly, which hasn't necessarily been the case in some recent years. Looking at how the team tend to improve so well as the year progresses, you can safely say the Scuderia are looking good for a title shot this season.

Bad day today, but such things happen, not really a lot anyone could do about the issues today, pity both drivers got issues, but they were completely unrelated one.

But I wanted to see how Alonso would have matched up to Vettel in race pace, that would have been telling, plus a more interesting battle for first.

The silly thing was, despite making 2 stops in 2 laps and having no DRS for 90% of the race, Alonso was still less than 20 seconds off the podium. Had Alonso not used the DRS after the 1st stop he may well have still made the podium. Ferrari clearly didnt think there was a faliure.

Not a lot, but those 4 points could be crucial at the end of the season!

To be fair, they wouldn't have been able to know at that stage, if the issue was a random occurrence, or if it would replicate itself again I think, and they probably couldn't see the error at that time from the telementary, in other words, had no real idea what was going on ,so went for the more aggressive strategy.

But you forgot to account for Alonso's strategy being skewered, due to the early first stop for the DRS fix, would have been faster without that too I think.

Shocking day for the Scuderia, and completely unexpected!

Anyone diagnosed the tyre failure for Massa?

Ferrari probably set the cars up too aggressive for pace and it backfired. Alonso probably should be thanking his lucky stars due to the DRS issue he was saved from the tyre debacle since he didn't get the chance to run full stints with his car and salvaged some points in the end.

It was a nightmare in a bubble car for them.

Latest reports say that Ferrari are as yet unsure as to the causes for Massa's tyre failure or Alonso's DRS glitch.
